Ogun State Government has reiterated its commitment to improving the standard of education sector with initiative such as digital learning which is central to the technological drive of the "Building Our Future Together Agenda" of Prince Dapo Abiodun's administration in the state
The State Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, stated this in her keynote address at a STEM education Programme which has its theme: ‘Building a Future-Ready STEM Ecosystem in Nigeria’, organised by the Rock City Center for Media and Leadership Development.
According to her, Ogun State Government is encouraging Science education in the State, by putting in place infrastructures so that learners and teachers could be in conducive environments and improve learning outcomes
She added that the present government was also strengthening Technical and Vocational Education across the State to enable its indigenes compete favourably with their contemporaries globally
Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele revealed that as population growth occurs, there would always be the need for new homes, cars, facilities, more roads and even better health care, saying only those who are in the STEM profession are better equipped to come up with technologies to do them faster, to do them cheaper.
While appreciating the organisers for putting together the programme, she then charged those present to take STEM education seriously, saying it was the foundation for every innovation that man could think of
"When you go into it as a field of study or profession, you're not only doing it for yourself but for your family, your community and your country", she said
Also speaking, the Olowu of Owu-Kingdom Oba (Prof .) Saka Matemilola, encouraged students to see STEM as something to focus and embrace, particularly at this digital age, adding that there is no career they want to pursue in life that won’t require Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
The monarch called on stakeholders in relevant fields to take a cue from the programme by encouraging students to have passion for the course.
In her lecture titled 'Innovation Entrepreneurship and Career pathways in STEM', the guest lecturer, who is the Head of Department, Biochemistry, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Lagos, Prof. Titilola Aderonke, commended the organiser for the event, saying STEM education requires the collective collaboration of Students, traditional institutions, investment organizations, government and stakeholders
She encouraged students not to be afraid of failure, urging them to embrace the principles of mentorship and volunteering as opportunities to acquire new skills leading to innovation which begins with one idea.
She added that curiosity, Innovation is turning into Technology, as young innovators were already using STEM, calling on teachers to continue to nurture the curiosity in students.
She further explained that critical thinking and problem solving skills in the classrooms, such as technology and innovative development should take the lead in encouraging young ones to embrace STEM.
Earlier, Chief Executive Officer of Rockcity Centre for Media and Leadership Development and Rockcity FM, Dr. Niran Malaolu, disclosed that the programme became imperative with a view to encouraging younger generations to develop interest and have passion for STEM, noting that with the evolving world, nothing would work perfectly without, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
