An Abeokuta based second tier Nigeria National League side , Gateway United Football Club have sympathised with the family, friends, and fans of former Eagles Legend, Henry Nwosu (MON) who died on Saturday, 14th March 2026 at the age of 62
Nwosu, the former coach who led Gateway FC from 2013 to 2015, passed away in the early hours of the day at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, after spending five days in Intensive Care battling illness.
Nicknamed the “Youngest Millionaire,” Coach Nwosu was celebrated for his mentorship, leadership, and dedication to Nigerian football.
Nwosu, was among the historic victorious Green Eagles squad that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations AFCON for the first time in the history of Nigerian football
He played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of many players and inspiring a generation of footballers.
During his tenure, he was known for his commitment to developing talent and his unwavering passion for the game, leaving a lasting legacy at Gateway FC and in Nigerian football as a whole.
General Manager of the club, Mr. Niyi Soleye in a statement on behalf of the team, described Nwosu as a remarkable leader and mentor to young players in the round leather game
"Coach Henry Nwosu was a remarkable leader and mentor. His passion for football, commitment to developing talent, and dedication to the game were evident in every interaction. Gateway FC mourns the loss of a true football icon, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time", he stated
