A call for the zoning of Ogun State’s governorship to Muslims ahead of the 2027 elections took centre stage on Friday as thousands of worshippers gathered for the Eid-ul-Fitr prayers in Abeokuta, even as clerics warned against returning to sinful acts after Ramadan.
Chief Imam of Daarus Salaam Central Mosque, Oluwo, Onikolobo, Abeokuta, Alhaji Nurudeen Olajire made the call during his Eid-ul-Fitr khutbah held at The Muslim Congress (TMC) praying ground, Moshood Abiola Model Primary School, Car Wash in Adatan area of the State capital
Addressing the congregation, Olajire declared that fairness and equity demand that political parties in Ogun State consider competent Muslim candidates for the governorship position in 2027, noting that the state has had only one Muslim governor in its history.
“In the history of Ogun State, we have had only one Muslim governor. As we approach the 2027 elections, political parties should consider zoning the governorship seat to Muslims in the interest of fairness and inclusivity,” he said, urging Muslims to mobilise support for parties that present credible candidates from the faith.
Beyond politics, the cleric emphasised the spiritual essence of Eid, describing it as “a day of joy for believers and gratitude to Allah” after the successful completion of Ramadan fasting. He reminded worshippers that true celebration lies in obedience to Allah and not mere festivity.
Quoting the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Olajire said those who observed Ramadan with faith and sincerity have the promise of forgiveness, adding that the real test begins after Ramadan.
“Obedience does not end with Ramadan. The Lord of Ramadan is the Lord of all months. Whoever has done well should sustain it, and whoever fell short should strive to improve,” he admonished.
He warned Muslims against disunity, stressing that the strength of the Muslim Ummah lies not in numbers but in unity of purpose and harmony.
“Division is the root of weakness and calamity. It opens the door for enemies to infiltrate and destabilise the community. Muslims must remain united, reconcile differences, and hold firmly to their faith,” he said.
The Imam also assigned responsibilities to different segments of society, charging scholars to provide sound guidance, the wealthy to support the needy through charity and zakat, and the youth to channel their energy towards national development while rejecting corruption and moral deviation.
On national security, Olajire condemned the recent killing of worshippers in Maiduguri, Borno State, where at least 23 Muslims were reportedly killed and over 100 injured in a suicide attack during Ramadan.
Describing the incident as a “heinous and unjust act,” he stressed that Islam does not condone violence against innocent people and called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to protect lives and property.
“These recurring attacks threaten the stability of our nation. Government must act decisively to eliminate criminal elements and restore confidence in the country’s security architecture,” he said.
The cleric also drew attention to the plight of Muslims in Palestine, particularly restrictions around Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa, urging the faithful not to abandon the cause.
“Al-Aqsa is a trust upon the Ummah. Muslims must continue to pray and support their brothers who are facing oppression and restrictions in worship,” he added.
In his second sermon, Olajire highlighted the need for reconciliation and social harmony, urging Muslims to mend broken relationships, maintain family ties, and show kindness to neighbours.
He also addressed women, encouraging them to uphold modesty, nurture their homes, and instill moral values in their children, describing them as the foundation of society.
On global issues, the Imam cautioned Muslims against viewing international conflicts, including tensions involving Iran, through emotional or sectarian lenses, urging a balanced, principled approach rooted in justice and Islamic teachings.
The Eid prayer concluded with supplications for peace in Nigeria, mercy for the deceased, and stability in the country, as worshippers dispersed to celebrate with family and loved ones.
