Most of the affected teachers in public secondary schools in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital have decried the ongoing redistribution exercise being carried out by the State Teaching Service Commission, saying the transfer has caused serious hardship for them, particularly couples who are in the teaching service
Chairman of the State Teaching Service Commission, Apostle Biodun Sanyaolu had in a statement, explained that the redistribution exercise was aimed at addressing the imbalance in the deployment of teachers in public secondary schools, particularly between those in urban areas having more than required teachers and semi-urban and rural areas, experiencing acute shortage of teachers
He described the exercise as part of the statutory responsibility of the commission, saying the ongoing redistribution exercise by the commission is a procedural measure to correct the previous lopsidedness in the distribution of teachers
But the affected teachers view the transfer as punitive rather than a procedural measure.
A top official of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) in the state told Edu-biznews that the exercise has dislocated some families
"Consider a couple who are residing and teaching in Abeokuta, the wife is transferred to Ipokia, and the husband is sent to another local government area"
"A teacher in Ikija high school is transferred to a more remote area in Yewa while his spouse at Ebenezer is moved to Imeko"
"In the teaching sector, there is no transfer allowance, so these transfers must be handled with consideration for the individuals involved"
He added that the commission ought to have deployed the newly recruited teachers under Ogun TEACh scheme to secondary schools in rural areas, to address the issue of shortage of teachers in such schools
"Furthermore, why is Tescom assigning newly recruited Ogun TEACh teachers to urban schools when there are rural schools that are in dire need of teachers?", he asked rhetorically
