Ogun State Government has refuted media reports alleging that a particular candidate has been selected for the vacant stool of the Awujale of Ijebuland.
No fewer than 95 candidates have been nominated for consideration for the vacant Awujale of Ijebuland stool, following the commencement of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House nomination meeting.
The State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat in a statement on Tuesday, clarified that the selection process for the stool of Awujale complied strictly with customary law, established Chieftaincy Declarations and the extant laws of the State.
Hon. Hamzat stated that the State government remained fully committed to upholding due process, fairness, neutrality and respect for the age-long traditions of Ijebuland throughout the selection process, warning the public against deliberate spread of false information, misinformation or inciting publications capable of causing tension, disaffection or a breach of peace in Ijebuland and the State at large.
The Commissioner stressed that any individual or group found fabricating, promoting or circulating such claims would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law, urging members of the public to disregard such publications and refrain from actions capable of undermining peace, public order and the integrity of the traditional institution.
Hon. Hamzat called on the media, opinion leaders and all stakeholders to act responsibly by verifying information through official channels, assuring residents of government’s unwavering commitment to transparency, justice and the preservation of cultural heritage.
He noted that the government would not hesitate to invoke Section 23(2) of the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State, 2021, against anyone parading themselves as Awujale-elect before the conclusion of the legally recognised selection process.

Meanwhile the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, explained that the nomination process for the 95 candidates in Ijebu-Ode was carried out in line with the tradition of the people
Chairman and Head of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, Otunba Abdul Lateef Owoyemi who spoke with journalists during the process, disclosed that after the nomination process, names of the candidates that scale through would be forwarded to the Afobajes for screening
He added that whosoever emerge would eventually be presented to the Ogun State Government for consideration and approval.
Also speaking, the Onirete of Irete-Ijebu, Oba Abdulganiu Yesufu, commended the process, describing it as smooth and orderly, while he expressed confidence that the exercise would produce the most suitable candidate for the vacant stool.
It was also observed that certificates of nomination were issued to each of the 95 candidates at the end of the exercise.
It will be recalled that the Late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, joined his ancestors on on Saturday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, as announced by the Ogun State Government
