Management of the Lagos State University (LASU) has formally received its victorious contingent to the 27th Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA), hosted by the University of Jos, Plateau State, between 6th and 16th November 2025
The athletes presented their medals to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello who hosted them on Tuesday inside the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room, Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, on the Ojo main campus of the university
At the competition, LASU recorded an impressive outing, winning a total of 39 medals 10 gold, 14 silver, and 15 bronze to emerge fifth overall out of 74 universities that participated nationwide, marking the institution’s highest-ever finish in the history of the competition.
Speaking on behalf of the contingent, the Chairman of the LASU Sports Council, Professor Simeon Dosunmu, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the University’s sponsorship and support, which he described as pivotal to the team’s success at the NUGA Games.
He commended the University Management, under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, for its sustained commitment to sports development and student welfare, noting that the support shown by the management had been unprecedented.
Professor Dosunmu further appealed for continued sponsorship to enable LASU’s participation in, and hosting of, future competitions, assuring that the team was well positioned to win more accolades and bring greater honours to the University.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor Oluwatoyin Enikuomehin, conveyed warm greetings and commendations to the contingent.
She praised the athletes for demonstrating that LASU remains a leading force in university sports, noting that the team had consistently distinguished itself as worthy ambassadors of the institution at both FASU and NUGA competitions.
She acknowledged their determination to leave a lasting legacy and assured them that their efforts were duly recognised and appreciated.
According to her, “LASU is committed to building a sports system that other universities can emulate.”
She further encouraged the athletes to surpass their current achievements, charging them to work harder across all sporting disciplines.
The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the University’s commitment to supporting student-athletes and engaging relevant stakeholders, while assuring the team that all requests would be given due consideration.
In a moment of optimism, she challenged the contingent to aim exclusively for gold medals in future outings and announced that a token reward had been approved for all medallists.
In a symbolic gesture, the Chairman of the Sports Council decorated the Vice-Chancellor with a gold medal, while the Vice-Chancellor, in turn, decorated some of the highest medal winners from the contingent.
Speaking on behalf of the team, LASU female team captain, Miss Noshoodat Ayoola, expressed profound gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and members of the University Management for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout the games.
She noted that the commitment to sports development and student welfare enabled the team to compete with confidence and pride as true LASU ambassadors, assuring that Team LASU would continue to uphold the University’s values of excellence.
The event was attended by the representative of the University Registrar, Dr Lateef Sekoni; the representative of the University Bursar, Mr Jerry Jinadu; Acting Dean, Students Affairs Division, Dr Abiodun Fatai-Abatan; the Deputy Director of Sports; Coach Idowu Owoyemi; team coaches; and members of the Vice-Chancellor’s Office.
