FUMMSA's V.C Charges Pioneer Students To Strive For Academic Excellence, Shun Unlawful Association

Vice-Chancellor of the  Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences, (FUMMSA), Abeokuta, Ogun State, Professor Fatiu Arogundade has asked  over one thousand newly matriculated students for the 2025/2026 academic session to take full advantage of the opportunity offered to them, by  focussing on academic excellence, acquiring relevant skills, upholding discipline and shunning unlawful associations that could derail their progress in the institution 

The Vice-Chancellor gave the charge during the matriculation ceremony for the pioneer set of students held at FUMMSA’s temporary site on the premises of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, 

He described described the ceremony as a reflection of Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening health and education sectors

The university according to him, is developing new curricula to meet national priorities, particularly in medical fields.

Professor Arogundade, said the university was mandated to promote the advancement of learning and provide equal access to higher education in medicine and other health sciences, irrespective of race, creed, gender, or political belief.

The event had matriculating students from eight faculties of the university.

Similarly, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of FUMMSA, Professor Usman Shanawa underscored the national significance of the university, stressing its role in producing highly skilled health workforce to address Nigeria’s medical needs.

Delivering the inaugural lecture entitled “FUMMSA: The Making of a Great Citadel of Learning,” former Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB) Professor Oluwafemi Balogun, advocated the need for strategic leadership, innovative policies, and a clear vision to attain global recognition.

He urged the University management to remain upright, promote peace among stakeholders, and prioritize staff welfare as key factors in sustaining the institution’s reputation.

In his goodwill message, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, advised the students and the university community to align themselves with the institution’s goals while upholding high standards of academic and professional integrity.

Present at the event were former Ogun State Governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, and a former Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Dr Ade Abolurin.
