School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) across public Schools in Ogun State have been charged to prioritise the supervision and protection of school infrastructure and facilities.
Chairman of the Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Evangelist Olalekan Ifede gave the charge while receiving the executive members of the SBMC at the Board’s Secretariat, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Ifede noted that effective performance of SBMCs in all local government areas would go a long way in safeguarding school facilities and ensuring proper maintenance of government investments in education.
He emphasised that the security of schools is paramount, urging the committees to seek the support of old students’ associations in providing night guards to protect school property.
“I must appreciate the work SBMCs are doing. When government provides facilities, how those facilities are used matters a lot. One of the major roles of SBMCs is the maintenance of government infrastructure and other school facilities, which will greatly help in sustaining our investments,” he said.
Also speaking, Permanent Member I of the Board, Barr. Femi Odufowokan, reiterated that education remained one of the cardinal priorities of the present administration, calling for the establishment and functionality of SBMCs in all schools across the state.
In his welcome address, the Board Secretary, Mr. Olubori Akinleye, stressed that government alone could not bear the full responsibility of education without the support of relevant stakeholders and well-meaning organisations
He described SBMCs as an integral part of school management, serving as a link between the community and the government, while commending members for volunteering their time and resources to improve school administration.
Responding, the State Chairman of SBMC, Alhaji Juwon Labode, explained that the committees were constituted at both State and Local government levels to strengthen the connection between schools and communities through participatory governance and accountability, aimed at improving pupils’ learning outcomes.
He stated that the primary objectives of the SBMC included promoting good governance practices at the school level, enhancing school performance and encouraging active community involvement in school decision-making.
Labode, further highlighted other key roles of the SBMCs such as promoting community interest in schools, ensuring accountability of assigned officers, protecting school infrastructure and monitoring the effectiveness of school management and leadership.
He commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for his commitment to educational development through the construction and renovation of numerous schools across the State.
“Without mincing words, our indefatigable Governor remained the Best Education-Friendly Governor not only in the South-West but across the entire Federation,” he concluded.
