House of Representatives has lauded Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, has been lauded for its transparency and innovation, describing the university as Nigeria’s most digitally advanced and integrity-driven institution
The House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on Certificate Racketeering led by its Chairman, Hon. Abubakar H. Fulata alongside Hon. Iliyasu Aliyin, Hon. Yusuf Kure, Hon. Rabiu Yusuf, Esq., Hon. K. Abdul-Hakeem, Hon. Adams Ogene, and Hon. Faud K. Laguda, gave the commendation
The visit, held at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room, Sixth Floor, Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, sought to interface with the University Management on measures adopted to curb certificate and admission racketeering in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Oseni Taiwo Afisi, warmly welcomed the lawmakers and expressed appreciation for their efforts in sanitising Nigeria’s education system.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that while certificate racketeering remains a national challenge, LASU has distinguished itself through its fully digitalised academic processes (from admission to graduation), making manipulation or falsification of records virtually impossible.
“LASU is Nigeria’s most digitalised university. Every process here from *admission, registration, assessment, and certificate issuance, is transparent and automated*, she noted
"Our certificates bear a *unique QR code* that allows instant verification anywhere in the world. This guarantees authenticity and eliminates the possibility of forgery.”
She further revealed that the accreditation exercise from 2023 to date recorded an impressive 98% success rate, reflecting the institution’s adherence to best academic and administrative standards.
Supporting the Vice-Chancellor's remarks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Oluwatoyin Enikuomehin, highlighted LASU’s mandatory use of *National Identification Numbers (NIN)* in student registration
He described it as an additional layer of identity verification. He added that the University’s integration with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) portal ensures that only verified graduates are processed for certificate issuance.
In his words “LASU competes globally in terms of certificate credibility. Every record is forensically verified both online and onsite through our digital systems. We have moved miles ahead to make admission and certificate racketeering practically impossible.”
The University Registrar, Mr Emmanuel A. FANU, also briefed the Committee on LASU’s disciplinary measures, emphasising the institution’s zero-tolerance policy towards any staff or student involved in fraudulent activities. He reiterated that all reported cases are handled through appropriate legal and disciplinary channels to preserve LASU’s hard-earned reputation for integrity.
Other top officials present included the University Bursar, Mr Said Babatunde Olayinka represented by the Deputy Bursar, Budget and Budgetry Control, Mr Adekunle M. Odunlami; Director, Legal Affairs Division, Mrs O. O. Boyejo; Deputy Registrar, Examinations and Records Division, Mrs A. T. Meruwoma; Deputy Registrar, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration's Office, Dr Taiwo Mobee; and Principal Public Relations Officer, Centre for Information and Public Relations, Ms Pedetin Ogun.
In their remarks, members of the Ad-hoc Committee commended LASU for setting a benchmark in transparency and innovation within the education sector. They applauded the University’s cutting-edge verification system and robust digital frameworks, describing LASU as “a model for other Nigerian institutions and one of the most credible universities in West Africa.”
Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Abubakar Fulata, lauded LASU’s leadership and reaffirmed the House’s commitment to eradicating certificate racketeering across the nation. He called for continuous collaboration between the National Assembly and LASU in promoting accountability and technological advancement in higher education.
To demonstrate confidence in LASU’s system, the Committee conducted a live test of a sample certificate, which was successfully verified through the University’s QR authentication platform.
The Vice-Chancellor, through her representative, pledged LASU’s unwavering support for the Committee’s mission, assuring that the University would continue to champion reforms that strengthen the credibility of Nigerian certificates both locally and internationally.
The University Registrar, Mr Emmanuel A. Fanu, gave the vote of thanks, appreciating the Committee for its proactive efforts towards restoring credibility to Nigeria’s education system and reaffirming LASU’s readiness to collaborate in achieving that goal.
