No fewer than sixty-nine (69) graduands have bagged first class honour in their respective bachelor degrees at the 17th convocation of Crescent University in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, just as the 20 year-old institution conferred Honorary Doctorate Degrees on former Deputy Inspector General of Police, Johnson Kokomo and two other distinguished Nigerians, Prof.Ahmed Bin Salawudeen and Agbaoye Orikolade Karim
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof.Ibraheem Gbajabiamila during the convocation ceremony held on Saturday inside the Bola Ajibola Auditorium, revealed that a total of 718 including the first set of Nursing students, graduated in various degree programmes for the 2024/2025 academic session of the university while 117 students graduated with Master's degree across all the departments
The Vice-Chancellor said the three personalities DIG Johnson Kokomo who was honoured with Doctor of Science, Political Science and International Studies, Prof.Ahmed Bin Salawudeen (Doctor of Science Business Administration) and Chief Kola Karim (Doctor of Science Business Administration) had contributed immensely to the development of the university in particular and humanity in general
Crescent University Abeokuta according to him, has full accreditation of all its academic programmes which included LLB Law, B,Sc Computer Science, B.Sc Microbiology, B.Sc Islamic Studies, B.Sc Mass Communication, B.Sc Accounting , B Sc Architecture, B.Sc Biochemistry, B.Sc Economics, B.Sc Business Administration, B.Sc Political Science and International Relations, BNSc Nursing as well as B.Sc Anatomy and B.Sc Physiology
"It is our desire to continue to expand our academic activities both horizontally and vertically. The administration will also continue with development and quality of programmes and products of the university"
"We do not compromise quality, therefore priority is given to ensure high quality of our programmes leading to full accreditation. We shall continue in our international best practice in all academic activities thereby making our university 21st century compliant in all ramifications ", he maintained
The Vice-Chancellor then urged the graduating class of 2025 to confront challenges that might come their way headlong , describing their degree certificates as a life jacket which must keep them afloat above any challeng
Similarly, the Proprietor and Chairman of Board of Trustees of the university, Prince Muhammed Adesegun Ajibola maintained that management of the Crescent University would continue to deepen its investments in physical development in all facets of life of the institution including continual improvements in hostel facilities, provision of adequate and reliable means of transportation, maintenance of aesthetics and environmental sanitation, enhancement of security apparatus and personnel
He added that the university has diversified sources of power generation to reduce outage incidences and many more areas
He assured that no stone would be left
unturned, to reset the institution for sustainable growth and development
"Our ambition in the short to medium term is to have an institution that is least impacted by the dysfunctions of the larger society. It is for this reason, for instance, that we have diversified the sources of water and electricity for our growing community. Our solar power programme is on course and we hope to make a success of it by the grace of God"
"We are also embarking on productive ventures that will not only increase our revenue base, but also serve the University community through the provision of basic needs and services in a pocket-friendly manner. Ventures that were comatose and hitherto abandoned have been reactivated, with investment in Fisheries, Adire (Tie and Dye) and the Bakery."
"We have made great strides since last October when we converged here for Convocation. It is my ardent resolve that by this time next year, this University would have attained such growth and expansion to the envy and delight of all. We therefore invite partnership, encouragement and support in attaining these aims and objectives" Prince Ajibola appealed
Also the Chancellor of the university Prof. Ibrahim Gambari who appreciated the proprietor, Prince Adesegun Ajibola, SAN for sustaining the legacy of academic excellence started by the late founder , Prince Bola Ajibola, expressed his excitement over the high quality products of Crescent University in various fields of human endeavours in the health, media and other critical sectors in the Nigeria's economy
"Here at Crescent University,our Nursing programme has clinched 100% pass six times in a row in recent RN,RM and Public Health examinations highly regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.Proudly, the maiden induction ceremony of the first set of our Nursing graduates took place two days ago on our campus where the Registrar of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Dr Ndagi Al-Hassan expressed his satisfaction with the programme"
" In the past, two of our products from the Department of Mass Communication had clinched highly sought after BBC jobs while others from various departments have earned for themselves appointments with reputable institutions like Central Bank,Federal Inland Revenue Service and many more.'
*Only last year, Mujeebat Idris,a final year student of Bola Ajibola College of Law, came first in the highly celebrated Paliamentary System Support Group (PSSG) National Essay Competition ahead of other finalists from University of Calabar and University of Ilorin respectively."
"I am also aware that today’s best graduating student, Habeeb Ganiyu has won numerous national and international prizes and awards to the admiration of BACOLAW and Crescent .All these and other achievements are pointers to quality of investment, facilities and human resources by private universities", he noted
The Chancellor then highlighted some of the major challenges confronting private universities in the country, particularly the disturbing rate of monthly electricity bill and called on the Federal Government to assist by extending its intervention through Tertiary Institutions Education Trust Fund TETFUND to private universities
"Attention of government must be drawn to the challenges private universities encounter on daily basis. For instance, our monthly electricity bill alone at crescent University, which used to be around One Million Naira two years ago, is now over N20m. This is in addition to the provision of security, solar, constant water supply, internet and WiFi subscription, library resources and several overheads. It is the responsibility of the constituted authority to ensure that private universities survive for the good of the society"
"I charge the Federal Government to include private universities in TETFUND. It should find ways and means to support private universities through competitive research grants and ensuring that such support is spread accross the six geo-political zones in the country", Prof. Gambari pleaded
High point of the convocation ceremony was the award of degrees to the graduating class of 2025 , conferment of honorary Doctorate Degrees to the three distinguished Nigerians and presentation of prizes to the outstanding students including the overall best Habeeb Ganiyu from the Bola Ajibola College of Law who several academic prizes
