LASU Kicks Against Alleged Racketeering, Says Admission Is Strictly Based On Fairness and Merit Not For Sale

Management of the Lagos State University Ojo, has strongly rejected the suggestion that admission can be bought in institution, saying every admission of candidate in the ongoing process is strictly guided by the principles of fairness, transparency and merit and not for sale as claimed in some quarters 

The university reacting to what it described as misleading narrative being circulated on social media platforms, 

particularly with regard to allegations of admission racketeering by members of staff, however assured candidates of readiness of the management to deal decisively with any of the members of staff caught in such unholy act, if reported 

Deputy Registrar/Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations of LASU, Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile in a statement obtained by Edu-biznews on Friday , said while university sincerely sympathised with candidates who, despite their strong results could not secure admission, it cannot be coerced or blackmailed into exceeding its approved capacity.

LASU as the most subscribed university in Nigeria with over 70,000 applicants as contained in JAMB UTME record for the 2025/ 2026 admission, can only admit 20 percent of the candidates seeking admission based on the approved carrying capacity for the institution, according to the statement 

"We sympathise sincerely with candidates who, despite strong results, could not be admitted, but LASU cannot be coerced or blackmailed into exceeding its approved capacity", she maintained 

The Spokesperson in the statement, explained that the admission policy of the university has always been guided by 70:30 ratio with preference given to indigenes of Lagos State, after conclusion of admission strictly based on merit in compliance with enabling laws of LASU 

"In line with this principle, the University has offered admission to candidates of all origins who achieved the highest scores in each course (merit admission), as well as *all qualified, cleared, and verified indigenes of Lagos State (supplementary and discretionary admission)*. 

"Any indigene who has not yet received an offer is encouraged to keep checking their status, as more admission lists will be released", she stated 

The university warned that no member of staff has the authority or capacity to offer admission in exchange for money. 

"Candidates are therefore strongly advised that anyone making such claims is preying on desperation and cannot deliver on such promises", the institution cautioned applicants 

The statement clarified that the power to admit students rests solely with the Vice-Chancellor and no other person 

The university then encouraged 

applicants or members of the public with verifiable evidence to report cases of admission Racketeering via *complaints.admissions@lasu.edu.ng*. 

"Every genuine report will be thoroughly investigated, and anyone found culpable will face the full weight of disciplinary measures", the university assured
