Organized labour in Ogun State including the leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress and Joint Public Service Negotiation Council have rejected the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme for workers on the payroll of the State Government until a later date when all administrative and financial necessities are in place
The State Chairman of NLC, Comrade Hameed Benco-Ademola, his TUC counter-part, Comrade Akeem Lasisi that of JNC, Comrade Isa Olude in their joint address at a press conference on Wednesday at Labour House in Abeokuta, the State capital, described the scheme whose full implementation ought to have commenced on last Tuesday, 1st of July, 2025, accusing government of non remittance of over Eighty-Two billion (N82 billion) Naira deducted from salaries of workers in addition to government counter-part in the last seventeen (17) years to Pension Funds Administrators (PFAs)
The State Government according to them, is not prepared to deliver on the expectations of workers on the Contributory Pension Scheme
The organized labour also demanded for the suspension of the Ogun State Pension Reform Law implementation within the next 72 hours by the government
The labour claimed that it observed inconsistencies of government in the implementation of the 2008 pension reform law which was later amended in 2013
For instance, the labour claimed that there was no existence of the State Bureau of Contributory Pension, no existence of mandatory Contributory Pension Board, and no comprehensive Register or data base on the Contributory Pension Scheme
The organized labour maintained that there was no existence of actuarial valuation of past services of all Public Servants and no existence of mandatory Life Insurance policy for workers supposedly on the Contributory Pension Scheme
They accused the previous administration of Otunba Gbenga Daniel of remitting just 25 months out of eight tenure in office, the immediate past administration of Sen.Ibikunle Amosun remitted just for a year out of his eight years in office while the present administration of Prince Dapo Abiodun was yet to remit any deductions in the past six years
Labour stressed the need for government to dialogue with its leadership within the next 72 hours, saying failure to do so will lead meeting with its organs at various levels to determine the next line of action
The organized labour insisted on the outright cancellation of the pension scheme, since government has not demonstrated transparency on the workers who are still in darkness as regards the implementation of the pension scheme
On the implementation of consequential adjustment on the new minimum wage , the labour leaders explained that it has set up a committee working on proper implementation of adjustments on various salary scales across levels 1-17
The labour leaders however clarified that the N42,000 salary addition across various grade levels was not perculiar with Ogun State on the consequential adjustment, saying it is a national issue which is still being resolved by national leadership of both NLC and TUC
