Crescent University in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital has rolled out the drums in celebration of its 20 years of academic excellence with a number of activities in the coming weeks including anniversary lecture and awards to outstanding alumni and distinguished Nigerians in appreciation of their contributions to the growth of the institution
Proprietor of the university, Prince Mahruf Adesegun Ajibola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) addressing newsmen at a media briefing in Abeokuta as part of activities of the celebration, also renewed called on the Federal Government to extend the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Intervention capital projects to private tertiary institutions who are equally training the needed man-power for the nation's economy
He explained that such direct intervention on Crescent University campus by TETFUND would go a long way to expand the existing facilities to provide more young Nigerians with opportunities for university education
The Proprietor described establishment of Crescent University in 2005 by his late father, Prince Bola Ajibola who served as Nigeria's Attorney General and one of the jurists at the International Court of Justice in Hague, Neither land, as a greatest legacy for humanity committed to producing high quality graduates for the nation
He cited several academic feats of the products of the university and numerous contributions to the economy as attested by employers of labour in the country
"Proudly, our Alumni have consistently been demonstrating these traits of excellence in character. Employers of labour across the world rate our products highly in character and integrity"
"Our first class is world-class We recall one Rafiat Gawat who made a first class at Crescent University and replicated the feat at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland at Master’s level with a distinction. Rafiat Ali achieved the same feat in Forensic Accounting from the University of Portsmouth, United Kingdom also at Master’s level. Many others abound afterwards"
Prince Mahruf Ajibola recalled the academic exploits of a 400-level student of the Bola Ajibola College of Law who came first in the Parliamentary System Support Group (PSSG) National Essay Competition ahead of University of Calabar and University of Ilorin.
The Crescent University's alumni according to him, are already doing well in top positions in various fields of endeavour, adding that the university's College of Law established few years ago has continued to produce first class lawyers at the Nigerian Law School
"First class at the Nigerian Law School All within a few years of the establishment of Bola Ajibola College of Law, some of our law graduates who made first class at Bola Ajibola College of Law also repeated the feat at the call to bar examinations"
He also acknowledged the financial support of Kensington Adebutu Foundation and other wealthy individuals who contributed to the growth physical infrastructure of the university
"Worthy of mention are a few like Sir Kensington Adebutu who donated the university library, Alhaji Aliko Dangote who donated two halls of residence in his parents' names; Late Dr Remi Olowude who donated the ICT building and several other distinguished personalities and governments who have supported our vision", he appreciated
The Chairman , Board of Trustees who acknowledged the numerous supports from several state governments including governments of Sokoto, Kano, Lagos, Zamfara who sponsored many students on scholarship to the university, also noted academic feats of products of Mass Communication Department of the university
"Alumni at the BBC and Multinational Companies Products of Crescent University clinch international appointments in Blue Chip companies. This is not a one-off but a continuous success story of our university. Specifically, two products from our Department of Mass Communication have got highly competitive jobs from the BBC," he stated
Crescent University he maintained has continued to produce entrepreneurs who are employers of labour while the institution's academic programmes are fully accredited by National University Commission, particularly the Nursing Science
"Many of our products have now become entrepreneurs and employers of labour.100% NUC Accreditation Status Crescent University has recorded 100% success in accreditation of all courses from time to time. Specifically, our Department of Nursing has also recorded 100% in Registered Nursing (RN) and Registered Midwifery (RM) professional examinations" , he added
Similarly the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ibraheem Gbajabiamila revealed that the university in the next two years would commence academic programmes in the medical school while Cyber Security and Software Engineering would commence at the College Information and Communication Technology
In the area of research, he revealed that a number of academics at the university are still doing some research works across disciplines
He described electricity as the greatest challenge confronting the university, revealing the monthly electricity bill has risen from less than a million Naira to N27million as at last month
The Vice Chancellor therefore called for a downward review of the electricity tarrif by relevant government agencies, saying private tertiary institutions should not be treated as multi-national companies
Registrar of the university, Mr. Zakariyya Ajibola was full of appreciation for media, calling for a sustained support for all activities of the institution as partner in progress
