Ogun Hails 15 year -old Tobiloba Akinsanmi's Feat In Swimming Event As Cricket Male, Female Teams Crash Out Of Race For Gold




 The Swimmers team of the Ogun State Contingent have clinched gold medals at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival in MKO Abiola Sports Complex, Kuto, Abeokuta.

The team Ogun defeated other States in the 800-metre freestyle event and Men's 100-metre backstroke.

A fifteen-year-old swimmer, Tobiloba Akinsanmi, made history at the 2024 Gateway Games, as she became the first Athlete to win the Arnold medal in the women's category.

The young Tobi, who recently returned from the United Kingdom to compete for her own State, delivered a stunning performance that not only won her gold but also the admiration of many.

Her performance had set the pace for the Swimming events and marked her as a rising star in Nigeria Sports.

In an interview with Journalists, Tobi opened up about the emotional and physical hurdles she had to overcome, " 

"The challenges are mostly Mental, my body is hurting, but I told myself I have trained for this moment, I kept diving and when I touched the wall, the pain just disappeared, I am going to break the record, I will get more Medals and keep believing in myself", she declared.

Similarly , Kolade Otunla, delivered a stellar performance to win Gold in the men's 100 meters back Stroker, setting a new festival record, clocking a time of 1 minute 32.41 seconds in the ongoing sports festival.

Responding, Ogun State Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon, Wasiu Isiaka, said he was confident that the State Contingents would make Ogun proud in all the slated events.

"Our contingents are performing because of their preparedness and experiences", he said.

However, it was different story for Team Ogun's male and female cricket teams who are left with no option than to win consolatory bronze in the coming third match  of the T20 cricket at the ongoing Gateway games.

The two host teams lost their respective semi-finals on Friday in disappointing fashions.

The male team will face Team Oyo in the bronze medal match on Saturday after losing to Team Edo in the semifinals by nine wickets. 

Team Oyo lost to Kaduna in their own semifinals.

The host cricket teams will hope to contribute to Team Ogun's medal overall with a double-bronze medal in the third place matches as the women's team hope to cap an impressive campaign off with bronze after losing to Team Lagos on Friday in the semifinals.

Team Lagos secured a place in the Gold medal match with an eight runs win and will face Edo in the final. Team Ogun women will on Saturday play for a bronze medal match against their counterparts from Akwa Ibom
