Lagos State University (LASU) has formalised its partnership agreement with a Non-Governmental Organisation, Alliances for Africa (AFA), through signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
The partnership is aimed at enhancing the fight against sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) within the university community.
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Oseni Taiwo Afisi; signed the MoU with
Mrs Blessing Duru, Director of Programmes at AFA.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Afisi during the event held at the Senate Building of the university,described the partnership as a reinforcement of LASU’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a safe and inclusive environment, free from all forms of SGBV.
He emphasised that the university has long been proactive in this area, citing its comprehensive sexual harassment policy, the establishment of a Centre for Response and Prevention Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, and the incorporation of a United Nations-backed course on Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies into its curriculum.
In her remarks, Mrs Duru highlighted AFA’s leading role in combating SGBV in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
She stated that LASU was selected as one of 12 institutions for the initiative due to its track record and strong institutional stance against SGBV.
She expressed AFA’s enthusiasm in joining forces with LASU to expand the scope and impact of the campaign.
The two-year MoU outlines commitments to the development and effective implementation of policies against sexual harassment, capacity building, advocacy, and the promotion of a culture of zero tolerance for gender-based violence.
The signing ceremony was attended by key members of the university management, including officials from the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Academics) Office, the Legal Unit led by Mrs O.O Boyejo and the Centre for Response and Prevention of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, led by Dr Igot Ofem
