Director General of National Sports Commission, Chief Bukola Olopade has given the reason for the fresh shift in the date of the 22nd National Sports Festival to be hosted by Ogun State from the initial January, 2025 date to the current May 16-30
Olopade speaking with newsmen late on Thursday in Abeokuta, shortly after the maiden Joint Technical Meeting for the coming sports festival, stressed the need for the commission to respect the decision of the technical committee who suggested the shift, so as address all the technical observations raised during the meeting, after assessment or inspection of facilities being put for the games
He added that the members of the technical committee for the games would work closely with the project manager from the construction firm handling the ongoing construction of sporting facilities at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Kuto and Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja both in Abeokuta and other facilities designated for the festival
NSC DG who is also Chairman of Main Organizing Committee for the sports fiesta, assured athletes and officials from the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory FCT, Abuja of best ever games in the history of the sports festival in the country, considering the number of innovations introduced and digitalized operations by members of the organizing committee including those in the Local Organizing Committee
Also speaking, the Ogun State Commissioner for Sports, Mr.Wasiu Isiaka accompanied by his counter part in the health ministry, Dr. Tomi Coker assured that the State through members of LOC would work closely with MOC led by DG of NSC , to jointly package the most memorable games ever hosted in the country
All Directors of Sports, Sports Commissioners and other stakeholders at the joint technical session presided over by the Director General of NSC, Bukola Olopade, had earlier issued a communique to the media at the end of their meeting held at the banquet hall of MITROS Residence in Abeokuta, where the fresh date for holding of the 22nd edition of sports festival for May ,2025 was approved and announced
Participants in the communique, commended the Federal Government for its political will to develop sports in the country through the creation of a Commission dedicated to manage the affairs of sports while expressing appreciation to Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and good people of the State for their warm reception, hospitality and commitment to the successful hosting and organisation of the 22nd National Sports Festival
They congratulated the new leadership of the National Sports Commission and urged them to remain steadfast in the discharge of their mandates while commending Chief Kunle Soname and the management of Babcock University for their support towards the organisation of the 22nd NSF
Stakeholders in the communique noted the activities so far undertaken by the MOC/LOC towards the actualisation of the Festival
On the Report as regards the Inspection of the Venues and Facilities, participants at the meeting urged Ogun State Government to use the Report as checklist to guide the State
They also agreed on the need for a 2nd Joint Technical Meeting/Inspection Visit to ensure that all observed issues have been addressed ahead of the Games while calling for more synergy between members of the MOC Sub-committees/Liaison Officers and relevant LOC Sub-Committees;
They noted that starting with the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, athletes discovered from the National Youth Games in some selected sports would be invited to participate in the National Sports Festival as Invited Junior Athletes which is part of the grand plan to nurture them to excel in their sport and develop as well-rounded individuals
The stakeholders in the communique, noted the new initiatives towards the awards of hosting Rights for the National Youth Games and National Sports Festival by the leadership of the National Sports Commission
They equally stressed the need for all States delegates to appoint Chief Medical Officer for easy interface before and during the Games
On the fresh shift in the date fixed for between May 16 and 30, stakeholders agreed that it would allow for more time to effect the observations and recommendations from the Joint Technical Meeting,
Inspection team at MKO Stadium in Kuto, inspected the swimming pool as well as tennis court, hand court under construction and later visited newly renovated Cricket oval
"Stakeholders agreed that the the dates for the 22nd National Sports Festival should be adjusted to May 16-30, 2025; and the Zonal Eliminations for Team Sports for the Games would hold from February 23-28, 2025; and enjoined the MOC Secretariat to amend the Games timeline and circulate to all concerned stakeholders accordingly', the communique concluded
