Secondary School Teachers In public schools have asked the State Government to strongly consider the conduct of comprehensive medical test of every learner before their admission into school, as part of strategic measures that must be taken to forestall the re-occurence of the death of an SS2 student of Obada Grammar School, Monday Arijo

The student was said to have suddenly collapsed and died from complications of the punishment he was made to serve which included performance of 162 frog jumps after he had received 24 strokes of cane . the unfortunate incident led to the closure of the school on the 27th of October, 2024 by the State Government and suspension of the affected teacher ,Amzadjo Elijah

Chairman of the State branch of Academic Staff Union Of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Dr. Felix Agbesanwa who made the call on Tuesday while featuring a live programme on RockcityFM in Abeokuta, monitored by Edu-Biznews, explained that such medical test would expose underlining health challenges of learners to enable the school effectively manage the illment during the stay of leaners in school

Agbesanwa also called on government to review its ban on corporal punishment, raising concern that such outright ban might lead to producing high degree of undisciplined students in the society

He recommended light corporal punishment for students, saying two strokes of cane on a child as form of punishment and correction by a teacher would not be too much for any leaner

The State ASUSS boss, however cautioned fellow teachers to learn how to manage their anger, by not allowing themselves to be provoked by the unruly conduct of learners when punishing such learners

He asked them to always obtain the permission of their school principals as head of the school before applying corporal punishment on any learner

Agbesanwa expressed the readiness of the union to work closely with the State Government to raise crop of highly disciplined and descent students that will be  appreciated in the society for moral conduct
