Organized labour including leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Tuesday agreed to suspend their indefinite strike for five days, following agreement reached with the Federal Government to approve the payment of above N60,000 minimum wage for workers in the country
The leadership of both NLC and TUC had on Monday, 3rd of June, 2024 mobilized workers across the country, after the tripartite meeting comprising of representatives of labour, government and Organized Private Sector held on 31st of May, 2024, failed to reach consensus on a new minimum wage and a hike in electricity tariff
The parties at the meeting held on Monday night which lasted for hours, reached some resolutions according to a statement by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment Nkiruka Onyeojeocha, and her Information and National Orientation counterpart Mohammed Idris.
The resolution reads in part: “The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria is committed to a National Minimum Wage that is higher than N60,000“
"Arising from the above, the Tripartite Committee is to meet every day for the next one week with a view to arriving at an agreeable National Minimum Wage."
“Labour in deference to the high esteem of the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s commitment in (ii) above undertakes to convene a meeting of its organs immediately to consider this commitment; and that no worker would be victimized as a result of the industrial action.”
The nationwide strike on Monday and Tuesday crippled economic activities and thrown the entire country into darkness,as workers shutdown public schools, hospitals, banks and governments' Secretariats during the industrial action
