Trade Union Congress (TUC) has asked Ogun State Government to urgently review upward the N10,000 monthly palliative being paid to workers, saying the amount is grossing inadequate in the light of prevailing economic realities in Nigeria
The State Chairman of TUC, Comrade Akeem Lasisi who made the call on Wednesday during the 2024 May Day celebration and rally at MKO Abiola International Stadium in Kuto, Abeokuta, also appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to review the Contributory Pension Scheme in the state, by ensuring the immediate implementation of recommendations of the two committees on the Contributory Pension Scheme and Consequential Adjustment on Pension.
TUC who stressed the need for government at all levels to emphasize the importance of the theme of this year's celebration " People First" with implementation of workers friendly policies, equally urged Abiodun's administration to immediately ensure commencement of the New Minimum Wage as soon as the Federal Government resolved the issue of minimum wage
"We are looking forward to receiving warm, heart-cheering news of an increase in the #10,000 palliative pending the take-off of the New Minimum Wage as the #10,000 has obviously become inadequate, in the light of the prevailing economic realities"
"The government needs to review urgently the Contributory Pension Scheme, which obviously has failed right from its conception and has defeated its main objectives. The pension law has been grossly violated. Hence, the need to go back to the drawing board for a review as 2025 is fast approaching. We urge the government to make known and implement the recommendations of the two committees on the Contributory Pension Scheme and Consequential Adjustment on Pension", the union pleaded
Lasisi who said the union acknowledged the payment of four months of the outstanding cooperatives' deductions , the union in the month of March, urged the government to ensure payment of the remaining arrears to enable workers have access to loan facilities from their respective cooperative societies
"As your administration is marked with bags of jokers and miracles, we humbly expect another miracle today to kindly approve immediate payment of all outstanding cooperative deductions. You have done it before, you can do it again", the union expressed optimism
TUC also appealed to government to commence promotion excercise for 2023 while appreciating the approval of the 2022 promotion excercise with financial benefits
"While we say our utmost gratitude to your Government for approving the 2022 promotion exercise with financial benefits, as Oliver Twist, we wish that of 2023 which is long overdue be conducted soonest as 2024 is also due in another two months"
The union however appreciated the Prince Dapo Abiodun's administration for various efforts made to ensure payment of leave allowance in 2023 while appealing for the payment of arrears of 2015 and 2022
TUC equally commended the Christmas bonuses and quarterly payment of gratuities to retirees, urging government to expedite action of payment of gratuities to more beneficiaries
"We urge the government to expedite actions in the payment of gratuity as many of our pensioners are dying, and many are falling ill due to old age and illnesses that are avoidable", the union stated
Highpoint of the event was presentation of award of Most Labour Friendly Governor to the governor for his administration commitment to improving welfare of workers in the state
