2024 ITTF Africa: Nigeria's Aruna Reclaims Men's Singles Title After 7yrs

Nigeria's Aruna Quadri has reclaimed his men's singles title in Africa he last won seven years ago, 2017 in Agadir, Morocco

Quadri defeated Egypt’s El-Beiali Mohamed in a grand style, by four straight sets, to win the men’s singles title of the 2024 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa Cup in a final played on Tuesday in Kigali, Rwanda

The 35 year-old Nigerian eventually overcame the pain of losing in the final of the last three editions of the competition to other Egyptians including his arch-rival on the continent, Omar Assar in 2023 and 2022 editions and Ahmed Saleh in 2020.

Aruna completely dominated his Egyptian opponent in the final , winning  11-5, 11-6, 12-10 and 11-3 to clinch the prize.

However Egyptian Dina Meshref maintained her dominance in the women’s singles,  winning the competition for the ninth time, after  defeating her compatriot Mariam Alhoudaby in the final.

Meshref had earlier dismissed her Nigerian opponent Edem Offiong 4-0 in the semi-final en route to the final.

Both Aruna and Meshref have qualified for the qualifier for the 2025 ITTF World Cup in Doha, Qatar.

After the successful conclusion of the 2024 ITTF Africa Cup,  the final round of African qualifiers for the Paris Olympics is expected to commence  on Thursday.
