Major stakeholders in the built industry including Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON), block moulders, builders and have vowed to move against producers of sub-standard sandcrete blocks to reduce the disturbing trend of buildings collapse and loss of lives across the the country, particularly in Ogun State
Director General of SON, Dr.Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, the Ogun State Chairman of National Association of Block Moulders Association of Nigeria (NABMON) , Chief Salmon Abiodun Ajayi and building expert, Dr. Aladeloba Adeshina expressed the concern and readiness to tackle the unhealthy situation in the industry, during a day seminar which has its theme, "Sustaining The Production Of Quality Sandcrete Block In Challenging Time", organized by the association on Thursday in Abeokuta , the State capital
Okeke who was represented by South West Director of SON, Mrs Talatu Ethan, stressed the need for stakeholders to see the fight against sub-standard sandcrete blocks as a collective responsibility
"As stakeholders in the building industry, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that every sandcrete block produced meets the highest standards of quality and durability. By adhering to these standards, we not only safeguard the integrity of our structures but also protect the lives and livelihoods of countless individuals who rely on safe and reliable housing"
He tasked the leadership of NABMON to regulate the quality of sandcrete blocks being produced by members and report those who failed to adhere strictly to the required standard production process
Okeke urged block moulders to always be mindful of safety of lives and property and avoid compromising quality under any guise, saying quality of sandcrete blocks produced is a true reflection of the personality of such moulders
He encouraged them to embrace latest technology and various innovative ways of moulding quality sandcrete blocks to remain relevant in the built industry
"Let us work hand in hand to build a future where quality is never compromised, where safety is paramount, and where every block laid is a testament to our collective dedication to excellence", he charged
Similarly the State Chairman of NABMON speaking with newsmen on the sidelines of the seminar, assured SON of block moulders of strict compliance with the standard process of producing quality sandcrete blocks, saying that the association will not hesitate to fish out any of the block moulders who produced sub-standard sandcrete blocks
The Abaloye 1 of Egbaland stressed the need for block moulders to be certificated by the association to ensure that only quality sandcrete blocks are produced for construction to prevent buildings collapse and loss of lives
Chief Ajayi however cautioned property owners and building contractors to stop patronizing block moulders who are fond of producing sub-standard sandcrete blocks at very cheap cost to attract patronage
Also building expert, Dr Adeshina and a director in charge of quality control at SON, Engr.Bature Mohammed in their separate presentations during the event enlightened participants on how to ensure strict compliance with standard requirements of the block moulding industry and secure certification of the regulatory body for standard products
Adeshina who was part of formulation of National Building Codes, emphasized the need for block moulders to always comply with the codes when moulding quality sandcrete blocks while encouraging them to always embrace innovations in the block moulding to sustain production of quality sandcrete blocks and be relevant in the industry
Highpoint of the event was presentation of certificates to members of the association for their commitment to the production of quality sandcrete blocks in the state
