Trade Union Congress (TUC) has called on the Ogun State Government to review its security architecture , so as to make work places safe for workers to put in their very best and make the State more secured for investment and businesses to thrive
The State Council Chairman of TUC , Comrade Akeem Lasisi who was speaking on Wednesday in Abeokuta, during the 2024 annual training for the union's chapters and affiliates executives, made the call in response to the kidnapping of a secondary school teacher, Mr. Adegbenjo Adelowo of Community High School, Alabata on Tuesday, 5th of March, 2024 along the Alabata/Ibadan road en route Kila, on his way to his farm.
Lasisi who expressed the union's confidence in the ability of the Prince Dapo Abiodun's administration in ensuring safe environment for industrial harmony and businesses to thrive, says "No worker will put in his or her best amidst growing insecurity"
"Government should review the state's security architecture to make our state an impregnable fortress for criminals," the union stated
The TUC Chairman also demanded for the immediate payment of cooperative deductions from the salaries of workers as promised by the governor during his meeting with interest groups recently at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta
He asked government to resolve the knotty issues around contributory pension scheme and payment of gratuity and consequential adjustment on pension across the board
The union equally called on the State Government to as usual take the lead in the implementation of the new minimum wage in April for workers in the country
Lasisi who lauded Governor Abiodun for
for the payment of the Christmas bonus and other worthwhile, commendable and enviable incentives and interventions that have in no small measures endeared him to workers across the state, however assured the State Government of the commitment of workers in doubling their efforts to make the State more attractive for investors
"We are left in no doubt that when our Prayers are implemented in the coming days and weeks, Ogun State and its workers will become the envy of other states in Nigeria. We lead, others follow"
"it is my belief and expectation that once these demands are met by the state government, we will work to increase our productivity and make Ogun State the bride of investors, both local and international. Let's reciprocate the government's gesture for our own sake too" , the TUC Chairman tasked workers
Speaking on the theme of the annual training 'Diminished Wage Amidst A Weak Economy, Poor Social Insurance Coverage And Inadequate Social Safety Net', Lasisi described it as the most suitable at a time when Nigeria is struggling with survival of its economy
"I dare say that this theme could not have come at a better time than now. Our present socio-economic realities are not lost on anyone inside this hall or even outside of it. Our economic woes appear to have defied all entreaties and the current handlers of our national affairs and economy are daily seen as they do their best to rescue this dying nation that is currently in the Intensive Care Unit"
"As a responsible and responsive Labour Centre, the Trade Union Congress, at all strata of our Council, will continue to demonstrate decency, intelligence, education, nobility, non-partisanship, honesty, steadfastness, and justice in its relationship and interactions with government and in the interest of our members for their good", he assured workers
Similarly the State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Hameed Benco-Ademola said that organized labour including leadership of NLC,TUC and Joint Negotiating Council would continue to work in unison to engage government in the overall interest of workers in the state while enjoining participants to make good use of the knowledge gained at the training to effectively run the affairs of various chapters
Also speaking, the State Chairman of the Public Service Joint Negotiating Council, Comrade Isa Olude emphasized the need for immediate review of minimum wage in the country,saying the current minimum wage is far away from economic realities considering the very high cost of living without anyform of safety net for workers
Responding, the State Head of Service, Mr. Peter Fagbohun represented by Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Training and Establishment, Mrs Lydia Fajounbo, assured the workers of the commitment of the Abiodun's administration to training and welfare of workers while calling on them to reciprocate the support of government by working harder for the economic progress of the State
The State Controller/Director, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment Generation, Mr. Enoma Nnamdi emphasized the importance of training for labour leaders, assuring that Federal Government would continue to support such initiative aimed at ensuring industrial harmony among workforce in the country
