Suspected Hoodlums Attack Sunshine Stars Players, Officials

Players and officials of Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Sunshine Stars have been attacked by hoodlums, injuring several of them while a Ball boy was shot on their way to honour week 13 match against Bendel Insurance of Benin in Edo State

The team’s Media Officer Michael Akintunde who made this known on the X account of the club, said they were attacked on Thursday by  the suspected hoodlums along Ore-Benin Expressway

“Suspected hoodlums attack Sunshine Stars team bus along Ore-Benin Expressway,” the Akure, Ondo State-based side tweeted on their X account. “Ball boy shot. Team manager others, seriously injured.”

The tweet further reads in part:
“It saddens our hearts to inform Nigerians, especially football lovers that our team was attacked a few minutes ago along the Ore-Benin Expressway to honour an elite league tie against Insurance of Benin, scheduled for this weekend,” Akintunde said in the wake of the incident.

“Our ball boy was shot in the horrible attack, and our team manager and other club officials including players are seriously injured. It took the intervention of officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) that helped rescue the injured officials and the shot individuals to a nearby hospital.”

The Police Commands within the South West zone are yet to respond or comment on the ugly incident as at the time of filing this report

The team occupying 11th position with 16points on the table, last Wednesday defeated visiting Shooting Stars of Ibadan in Akure by a lone-goal in week 12 match before the incident
