Ogun State House of Assembly has intervened in the crisis rocking Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Abeokuta whose academic and non-academic staff are on indefinite strike over alleged unpaid three months salaries
Chairman of the State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Yusuf Amosun has received reports of disruption of academic calendar of MAPOLY, following incessant strikes by the academic staff of the institution as presented before the house, coupled with the electronic-petition received by the Speaker of the house, Right Honourable Olakunle Oluomo on the same matter.
The committee presented the reports during plenary on Tuesday inside hallow chamber of the house complex in Abeokuta, the State capital
Therefore, the State House of Assembly resolved to convene a public hearing, where issues affecting the institution will be seriously addressed, so as to protect the students from unnecessary delay caused by the industrial action
The Speaker added that the public hearing being planned by the house would involve stakeholders of the institution including the Governing Board, Management and Staff, as well as students and other concerned individuals with a view to finding a lasting solution to issues affecting the school very soon.
Meanwhile Ogun State House of Assembly has passed two bills including the Ogun State Legislative Funds Management law, 2023 and the Ogun State Judiciary Funds Management law, 2023 meant to ensure judicious allocation of funds in the two arms of government preparatory to the take off of their financial autonomies.
The passage of the bills followed the separate presentations of the Committee reports by the Chairman, House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Hon. Musefiu Lamidi, who also moved the motion for their adoption, seconded by the Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye and Hon. Wahab Haruna respectively which was supported by all the members.
The bills were later read and adopted clause-by-clause before the Committee of Supply, after which the motion for the third reading of the bills was moved by the Majority Leader Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by Hon. Oluseun Adesanya as well as the Minority Adeleye respectively and supported by the Whole House through a unanimous voice vote.
Hence, the Clerk/ Head of Legislative Service, Deji Adeyemo took the third reading of the bills before the lawmakers, while the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo directed that the clean copies of the bills be forwarded to the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun for his assent.
The second reading of the Judiciary Funds Management bill had earlier been carried out during the plenary, where members agreed on the need to ensure its immediate passage as it remained the bedrock for the self accounting responsibility of the arm of government to self- regulate and follow due process in all its financial dealings.
