Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has asked workers to resume work this Thursday, announcing an end to the two-day nation wide warning it declared to compel the Federal Government of Nigeria to begin the implementation of palliative packages for workers in the country, as part of short term measures to cushion the effect of removal of fuel subsidy
The industrial action did not enjoy the support of Trade Union Congress TUC) who reached an agreement with the government last Monday on modalities for the implementation of palliative packages within the next two weeks
NLC President, Joe Ajaero in a statement on Wednesday, commended Nigerian workers for participating in the strike, saying a significant stride was achieved.
Labour had embarked on a two-day nationwide strike on Tuesday and Wednesday, over what it described as unfulfilled agreements by the Federal Government on petrol subsidy removal.
The declaration of the warning strike recorded partial compliance in Lagos, Ogun and Ekiti States but grounded economic and commercial activities in several other states of the Federation.
The statement reads in part:
“We are pleased to report that, thanks to your resolute commitment, we have made significant strides in achieving the goals set during our National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which prompted the initiation of this warning strike,” Ajaero said.
“It is abundantly clear that our united message has resonated loudly with the government, and it would take a truly inattentive ear not to hear it.
“As we mark the end of the two-day nationwide warning strike today, at the stroke of midnight, we earnestly call upon you all to gracefully conclude the strike and return to work tomorrow, in accordance with our initial agreement.”, the statement concluded
