Ogun Govt Upgrades Skills Of 750 Science, Maths Teachers

   

   

Ogun State Government has intensified efforts towards enhancing the skill, capacity and productivity of its teachers teaching Science, Mathematics and Technical subjects in seconday and technical colleges, with the introduction of new methodology of teaching the subjects inline with the best global practices 

     

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Abosede Ogunleye, who made this known in Abeokuta, while fielding questions from newsmen, said the State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP), under the World Bank-assisted programme, had earlier conducted the first phase of ‘train the trainers’ capacity building for 750 participants, drawn from the 20 Local Government Areas of the State.

Ogunleye stated that the new methodology of teaching the subjects was necessitated due to the shortfalls observed in the teaching of science subjects and the need to improve on them in line with global best practices,

According to her,  the 750 teachers earlier trained are expected to train the remaining over 1250 Science, Technical, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) teachers.

She said arrangements had been concluded to commence the second phase of the training by the end of July 2023 adding that the training was in line with the Progressive Mathematics Initiative Progressive Science Initiative, PMI-PSI® approach, which was modified and developed for Ogun State by the New Jersey Center for Teaching and Learning in the United States of America

On her part, the Project Coordinator, OGSTEP, Mrs. Mosunmola Owo-Odusi disclosed that apart from the PMI-PSI® being a method for delivering content by STEM teachers, the classrooms for teaching science and technical subjects would be upgraded with relevant digital equipment and resources.

Speaking during a separate interview, two of the participants of the first phase of the training, Mrs. Comfort Dosu and Mr. Frank Azike, appreciated the State government for bringing such an initiative to the learning environment, saying the training would go a long way in improving both teachers’ and students’ abilities.
