The Toyin Ayinla tutored second tier league team had struggled to beat both Imperial FC and Ijebu United sides via penalties before getting to the final and crowned as the champions within regulation time
The match served as dress rehearsal for Gateway United's 2023 NNL season opener against Crown FC on Wednesday 22nd March, 2023 in Ogbomoso.
Chief Tactician of the team, Toyin Ayinla reacting to the win through a statement by the club's Media Officer, Moses Ojewumi , said that the victory should not played down by football analysts on the basis of quality of the opponents in the final of the competition
"It's easy for some people to play down this triumph because we played against an academy but there are no minnows in football. We played against a younger side full of potentials. We are happy"
The win came at the right time, five days before Crown FC clash in the league. We will enjoy this moment and plan ahead" Ayinla concluded.
