MAPOLY Lecturers Threaten Strike Over Unpaid Salaries...Issue March 16 Ultimatum To Governing Counçil

Lecturers at the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, (MAPOLY), Abeokuta have accused the Governing Counçil of the Ogun State Government owned tertiary institution of not paying their salaries and allowances for three months, threatening to embark on a strike to compel the council to do the needful

Chairman of the institution's branch of Academics Staff Union of Polytechnics( ASUP), Tomisi Adegunle and General Secretary, Samuel Malomo who issued the fresh threat on Friday in an open letter jointly signed and dated March 10, 2023 to the Chairman of Governing Counçil of which a copy was made available to Edu-biznews, gave the council a six- day ultimatum which expires on the 16th of March to clare the outstanding salaries and allowances of the workers or face Industrial action

The union expressed its displeasure over what it described as lackadaisical attitude of the Council and Management towards the wellbeing of  workers whom it claimed were last paid on November, 2022 while honorarium of part-time lecture were not paid for Seven (7) consecutive semesters!

 "The union therefore demands that the Governing Council should ensure that our members are paid all the outstanding salaries and all the arrears of part time claims, not later than Thursday 16th March, 2023. Failure to accede to this request will make it difficult for the union to continue to guarantee industrial harmony on campus", ASUP declared in the letter

The union said that the open letter should be seen as strike notice to the council and management of the polytechnic, saying its members can no longer endure the situation which has been worsened by naira swap policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria and  

ASUP urged the Ogun State Government to be alive to its responsibility of funding the Institution, insisting that MAPOLY should be seen as a public Institution and not one of the revenue generating agencies of government

"We want to state for the umpteenth time that MAPOLY is a public educational institution and can not be left alone to self-finance its recurrent and capital expenditures. MAPOLY is not an IGR agency" 

"The Ogun State Government must rise up to her responsibilities. Given the additional hardships brought about by the current monetary and fiscal brouhaha in the nation, the pain has become unbearable, the agony has reached a crescendo". 

"Please take this as a notice for the resumption of Industrial Dispute.  We remain committed to the upliftment of our dear citadel of learning, but not at the detriment to the welfare of our members", the union concluded in the letter
