Technical, Vocational Education Tools For Nigeria's Industrial Growth, Economic Development- Ogun Education Commissioner




Technical and vocational training has been identified as major tools required for Nigeria's industrial growth and transformation of its   socio-economic  status among comity of nations 

Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu who made this known at the commissioning of Nestle Technical Training Centre Flowergate in Sagamu, pointed out that the State, as the industrial nerve centre of the country had continued to intensify efforts in repositioning technical education.

Arigbabu informed that the present administration’s efforts to rejuvenate the State’s economy with a focus on reviving the dwindling fortune of education, especially technical and vocational education remain one of the pivots upon which the socio-economic transformation of any nation depends.

The Commissioner revealed that as part of the government’s strides to rejigged the sector, it had sponsored the technical school principals on a training course to Germany, an internship programme for technical instructors to industries for required skills knowledge, partnering with Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP), a World Bank initiative to transform the eight technical colleges to model technical colleges of international standards and many more.

“ Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET's) pivotal role in providing skilled manpower for industries and for self-reliance cannot be overemphasised, it is then important that TVET must be accorded the critical attention it deserves not only by the government but by all stakeholders especially the private sector”, Arigbabu stressed.

He appreciated the contributions of Nestle Food PLC in promoting vocational and technical education, especially in the area of industrial training for learners and teachers in the State, adding that the step would help equip the teeming youths with the necessary skills required to make them self-employed and employers of labour.

In their goodwill messages, the Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi and the Commissioner for Youths and Sport, Dr. Kehinde Oludare commended the initiative of the organisation, promising that the government would continue to support them to provide an enabling environment to succeed.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of Nestle Food PLC, Mr. Wassim Elhusseini said the intention of the company was to ensure that people embrace technical skills and training and to reduce unemployment in the country.
