Ogun State Government has finally redeemed its various cash rewards to the athletes who represented the State at the 20th National Sports Festival tagged ‘Delta 2022’ with cheques presented to the deserving athletes
Governor Dapo Abiodun had last December 14, 2022 announced a cash reward of a million naira for every gold won at the sporting fiesta, as well as N500,000 (silver) and N250,000 (bronze) while other athletes are to be rewarded with N100, 000 for their participation in each of the events at the game
A para athletic, Omolola Akinbode got a cheque of one million naira for winning Gold, and Dorcas Adesokan who won silver in badminton got five hundred thousand naira while Ayomide Akinsanya, received a cheque of Two hundred and fifty thousand naira for winning bronze in boxing at the event.
Speaking at the event the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Dr. Oluwadare Kehinde says one of the five agendas of the Prince Dapo Abiodun administration is youth empowerment and engagement
According to him, one of the best ways to engage the youth is through sporting activities which the Governor is given much attention to, adding that the government has put in place programmes for youth that would stimulate the economic policy of the State.
He affirmed that Alake Sports Centre complex would soon wear a new look and as efforts are in place to renovate the complex and all moribund sporting equipment be replaced for the use of the athletes across the State.
The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr. Qudus Yusuf said the cheque presentation would encourage the State athletes to continue honouring the invitation of the State government, and desist from abandoning it in sporting events.
In her remark, the Director of Sports, Mrs. Folakemi Rotimi appreciated the State government for the gesture extended to the athletes and the coaches, adding that it would spur them to do better.
Responding on behalf of the others Olajide Owolabi, thanked the government for the presentation, adding that it would go a long way in the heart of the athletes and will make them put more effort when representing the State in future sporting events.
Team Ogun finished at the eight position on the medal table with 70 medals including 15 gold and 18 silver
