Ogun Govt Moves To Prevent Buildings Collapse

Ogun State Government says its proposed Building and Construction Code 2022 will stop ugly trends in the built industry and open new ways to curb the incidence of building collapse to the barest minimum, as well as promote safety and qualitative housing for the people.

The State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Town Planner Olatunji Odunlami made this known in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, while presenting draft copies of the Code to representatives of stakeholders in the built industry after the inauguration of a 14-member Committee on the draft Code

He said that  contributions of stakeholders were valuable to the document and it would be forwarded to the House of Assembly for consideration.

Odunlami noted that the Building and Construction Code 2022 was derived from the National Building Code 2005, which stipulated that its provisions be made part and parcel of each State’s existing and future laws dealing with building design, construction and maintenance.

He called on the newly constituted committee members to study the document presented to them and make inputs from their areas of core competencies to achieve an inclusive, robust and acceptable code for the State to complement the existing legislature.

Responding, the Chairmen, Nigeria Institute of Architects and Nigeria Institute of Builders, Ogun State Chapters, Arc. Olatunji Oladipo and Bldr. Adeleke Ademola respectively, lauded the efforts of the government at setting up the Committee, saying the adoption of the National Building Code by the state government would sanitise the built environment, and prevent incessant building collapse in the country.
