Tinubu, Atiku , Obi Can't Revamp Nigeria's Economy Except.... Says Mike Ozekhome




A famous Constitutional Lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome has declared that none of the 2023 poll presidential candidates including Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of All Progressives Congress APC, former vice president, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku of Peoples Democratic Party PDP and Mr.Peter Obi of the Labour Party can revamp Nigeria's economy, except through structural changes    

Ozekhome, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria who was speaking on Thursday in Abeokuta as a guest speaker at the 2nd Independence Day Public Lecture organized by the Ogun State Counçil of Nigeria Labour Congress insisted on change of the 1999Constitution which he said was imposed on Nigerians by the military government, saying there should be a referendum where people decide the type of Constitution that will address the structural challenges affecting the business of governance in this country




He urged Nigeria to take a cue from  several countries including Kenya, Egypy, Eretria ,Tunisia ,Iran andUnited States who conducted such referendum for a new  Constitution 

The right Activist in his lecture titled "Nigeria In Search For An Enduring Political Structure Imperative Of Structural Reform", described Nigeria as a crawling country at 62 saying Nigeria of today is not what our founding fathers fought for  

He added that the ongoing amendment of the Constitution by the National Assembly would not solve the present insecurity and economic challenges confronting the country, stressing the need for a brand new Constitution 



"We must have a brand new Constitution for a Nigeria to start afresh where issues are addressed"

Ozekhome called  for a better system of government that is less expensive, suggesting the need to consider Regional Development Centre, "we must change our ways of doing things, to get the desired results"


He advocated for restructure of the system which empowers component states with control over resources and additional  constitutional responsibilities in the  areas of education, security, power generation while centre should only be vested with such responsibilities of defending the country and monetary regulations through the Central Bank

He enjoined Nigeria to emulate the ancient tigers by developing the small medium scale businesses, give attention to Agric Sector, "we must Invest in human capacity building

The guest speaker who stressed the importance of unity among various ethnic nationalities, expressed confidence that the moribund industries would be revived with improved power generation and supply, adding that decentralization of the security architeture will address the current challenges of insecurity arising from kidnapping, bandictary 

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Mudashiru Obasa who presided over the public lecture , stressed the need for Nigerians to protect Democratic Institution



"Nigerians must rise up and protect Democratic Institutions saying unions should not be limited to their demands but work hard to protect the democratic Institutions. We not allow any individuals to be stronger than our democratic Institutions in the country"he urged 


Speaking later with newsmen, Obasa however disagreed with the position of Ozekhome that none of the presidential candidates  can revamp the economy without structural reform, saying the APC candidacy of Tinubu has what it takes to fix the economy and other challenges in the country

His counter part in the Ogun State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Olakunle Oluomo stressed the need for Nigerian workers to defend democracy in the interest of the people


In his remarks ,Govermor Dapo Abiodun lauded the state council of NLC for providing the opportunity to discuss issues of national importance while assuring that his administration would continue to provide enabling environment for business to thrive


Abiodun represented by Head of Service, Dr. Nofiu Aighoro promised to continue to initiate policies targeted at promoting welfare of workers, reminding them that they remain critical major stakeholders in the Nigeria project 



The State Chairman of NLC , Comrade Emmanuel Bankole said that public lecture was organized to provide opportunity for Nigerians to profer solutions to current challenges bedeviling the country and reposition it for greatness  

Similarly State Chairman of Trade Union Congress, Akeem Lasisi said that the situation in the country requires support of all stakeholders to rescue the country


National President of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Comrade Muhammed Ibrahim also stressed the need for Nigerians to collectively work together for the unity of Nigeria
