Ogun NUT Worries Over Shortage Of Teachers..Calls For More Recruitment





Nigeria Union of Teachers NUT has expressed concern over the acute shortage of teachers in public primary and secondary schools in Ogun State.

Secretary of the State wing of the union, Comrade Samson Oyelere who raised the concern during a radio programme on Thursday monitored by Edu-Biznews in Abeokuta, revealed that some of the public schools have two teachers leaving most of the classrooms empty without teachers

Oyelere expressed the worry of NUT  over the increasing number of teachers who retired from public schools without commiserate replacement for them since 2009, adding that the situation would worsen when another set of over 600 teachers retire from the service between June and July this year 

He stressed the agitation of the union to the Prince Dapo Abiodun's administration, calling for permanent employment  for the set of new teachers currently engaged on temporary basis for period of two years under  the Ogun TEACh scheme 

The State NUT Scribe said that engaging the new teachers on permanent basis would further motivate them to give their best in classrooms 

"We are talking with the State Government to regularize the appointment of the teachers under the Ogun TEACh scheme after two years teaching experience

On the recently signed "Harmonized Age and Extension of Service For Teachers In Nigeria Act 2022" by President Mohammadu Buhari, he disclosed that the union was working closely with the Ogun State House of Assembly to domestic act in the state for teachers to attain age of 65 years or spend 40 years from retiring from the service as provided in the act 

Oyelere described the act as a product of struggle by NUT to retain experienced teachers beyond 60years or extend their  period of service from 35 to 40 years with the aimed of improving the quality of teaching in classrooms 

The State NUT wing however lauded various initiative of the Abiodun's administration to Improve the standard of education sector so far but quickly urged the government to address the six years of leave bonus arrears and unpaid deductions to encourage teachers to do more in classrooms
