Ogun State Government has asked religious organizations who hold crusades and organisers of public rallies, or entertainment live shows to obtain a permit at the environment ministry and also ensure that only quality sound-producing speakers should be put in place for use.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya made this known during a stakeholders meeting held to sensitise leaders of religious organisations, owners of recreation centers, hoteliers, musicians among others, imploring members of the public found wanting to desist from the activities causing noise pollution which is a major factor constituting environmental health harzard to lives
Oresanysa expressed government’s displeasure over the incessant noise pollution from various religious, recreation centers, hoteliers, and musicians among others.
He implored all concerned centres to reduce their noise to a permissible level that conforms with the existing law of the State which is the 40-degree decibel noise level at night and 60-degree decibel during the day in residential areas, opining that adequate compliance would ensure a conducive environment for the people.
He explained that the meeting was aimed at sensitizing the owners of the centres and stakeholders on noise regulations protocols to avoid future sanctioning while calling for their support towards ensuring 100% compliance.
Addressing the stakeholders, Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Toyin Taiwo stated that noise pollution has severe influences on human mental and physical health pointing out that noise pollution control is achievable if there is 100% compliance.
In his presentation, the Director, Environmental Health Management, Sanitarian Wemimo Onaeko highlighted the effects and measures to control noise pollution adding that the World Health Organization (WHO) had stated that over 2.5 billion people would experience hearing loss caused by noise pollution across the world if proper measures were not put in place to curb it.
Responding, a representative of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Mr. Leke Sopeyin gave his assurance at ensuring every church under the CAN umbrella abide by the State environmental law.
In his reaction, the Chief Imam, Abdul Fatai Muhammed Buhari commended the government for the sensitization meeting, promising to interconnect with other Muslim leaders across the State on ways to eradicate noise pollution.
Also speaking at the meeting was the Coordinator Abeokuta North and South Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), Prince Abiodun Adegoroye who expressed delight on the sensitization meeting, affirming that PMAN would adhere strictly to State environmental law.
