2,379,380 Candidates Sat For WASSCE In 2021, Over 68% In Nigeria - WAEC Registrar



Nigeria has been said to be responsible for over  68percent of the 2,379,380 total candidates that sat for the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination WASSCE  in 2021 across the five countries in West Africa sub-region, which is 114,673 higher than the number recorded in 2020

Registrar of the West Africa Examination Council WAEC,Mr. Pateh Bah revealed in his goodwill messages to the Nigeria office of the West Africa Sub-regional examination body on the occasion of 70th anniversary celebration of the council in Abuja 

According to him,"the figure comprised of 2,243,773 school candidates and 135,607 private candidates 

"Analysis of the 2021 WASSCE enrollment figure shows that the Gambia enrolled 21,058 candidates (or 0.89%), Ghana registered 499,062 candidates (or 20.97%),Liberia had 46,268 candidates (or 1.94%), Nigeria presented 1,633,858 candidates (or 68.67%), while Sierra Leone got 179,134 candidates (or 7.53%)", the registrar revealed

He added that the council was striving within the available resources to step up the acquisition of cutting-edge gadgets and software to check examination fraud while appreciating the ministries of education and relevant agencies in the member countries in the fight against examination malpractices

"We shall continue to plead with our Member Governments for the enforcement of relevant laws or promulgation of new ones where nine exist, to stem the tide of fraudulent activities in public examinations"

In another development , the Non Academic Staff and Associated Education Union NASU in the Abeokuta branch office of WAEC  has called for additional scripts room considering the large number of schools in Ogun State

Chairman of the union, Comrade Olanrewaju Afeez Oladipo who made the call, urged the examination council to give the Abeokuta office special consideration because of the volume of entries which according to him, keep on increasing at an increasing rate on yearly basis




Olanrewaju who lauded the Branch Controller, Ayobami Suberu for his meaningfully impact on the activities of the union within two months in office, said provision of script room would ease the burden of inadequate space being experienced by staff during sensitive assignments

NASU also made strong case for recruitment of staff saying the retirement and transfer of staff had taken place and only few replacement had been made by the Management

The union equally called for provision of utility vehicles to smooth operations of the office, especially during the conduct of diet examination of the council

Branch Controller of the office, also acknowledged the continous support of WAEC Chief Examiner in Home Economic Subject, Mrs. Oresegun who has been donating anniversary cake since establishment of the branch office in Ogun State




High point of the 70th anniversary of the examination body was the cutting of the cake after presentation of medals and trophies to staff who won various indoor games and mini-marathon race
