Nigeria Union of Teachers NUT has asked Governor Dapo Abiodun to initiate a bill aimed at providing a legal framework for establishment of the proposed Ogun State Education Trust Fund, so as to make it functional for the education sector, after expiration of his administration in the state
Secretary of the state wing of NUT, Comrade Samson Oyelere who lauded the last week, Monday pronouncement of the governor during the 30th and 31st joint Convocation of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, to soon launch the trust fund, said in an interview with Edu-Biznews in Abeokuta that launching such trust fund should be a product of the law, with the support of the State House of Assembly
"We are appealing to the Ogun State Government to work the talk, not only by establishing the trust fund on paper, let there be a law that backs it from the State House of Assembly, so that all concerned should see it as a product of law and not just a pronouncement", the union stated
Oyelere described the pronouncement by the governor as long over due, saying NUT as one of major stakeholders in the education sector, has been clamouring in past two years for the establishment of such Intervention fund for all levels of education, to ensure regular funding of infrastructure and provide other basic needs in the sector
He stressed the need for industries operating in the state, to set aside certain percentage of their annual profit as contributions to the trust fund, adding that education is a capital intensive project which requires the support of critical stakeholders to compliment government in the funding of the sector at all levels of education
"There can not be any meaningful develoment in any nation without reasonable develoment of the education sector, education is highly capital intensive and requires the support of all and sundry", the union summited
