No fewer than 536 athletes from 202 public and private Secondary schools are competing to represent Nigeria in the 2023 World School Athletic Championship slated for France
President of Nigeria School Sports Federation NSSF, Mrs Bisi Joseph disclosed this on Thursday during the two-day maiden National Trial holding at the Sports Complex of Yaba College of Technology in Lagos
She expressed optimism about chances of the Nigerian athletes in the global athletic events for schools expected to hold between May 14 and 22 , 2023 in France
The NSSF boss described the level of Competition among the athletes as highy encouraging, saying some of records set by the athletes on track compete favourably with the records of the International School Sports Federation ISSF
Joseph explained that the NSSF decided to hold the maiden trial, to ensure that only the best of the athletes from the schools represent Nigeria, unlike in the past. years
She expressed the federation's appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Education and that of Youth and Sports counterpart as well as the support of the Nigeria Olympic Committee NOC and Athletic Federation of Nigeria AFN for the success of the trial
The events at the trial include 800metres boys and girls, high jump boys, tripple jump girls, 100 metres boys and girls as well as 400metres boys and girls
The trial also features demonstrations in Tug of War, Race Walking and Deaf Sports
