Only 11 out of the 17 registered political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Nigeria, are participating in the July 24 councils'poll in Ogun State
Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC), Mr.Babatunde Osibodu revealed this while featuring on the "Sunday Morning Live On OGBC, a radio programme monitored in Abeokuta, the Ogun capital by EduBiznews
He listed some of the parties to include All Progressives Congress (APC), People's Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party amongst others
Osibodu expressed concern over low awareness for the election by political parties,except the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) whose aspirants' billboards and posters adorned every part of the state
He urged other political parties to do the same and have confident in the electoral agency and its process, by being more active in sensitizing and canvassing for votes from the eligible voters
The OGSIEC Boss who is worried about the situation, asked the parties to be more vincible on ground, to challenge APC at the poll, saying the Commission could only traced physical locations of six of the 11 parties who indicated interest in contesting for chairmanship and Councillorship positions at the poll
He reassured every political party of the readiness of OGSIEC to ensure a fair, credible and acceptable poll while assuring eligible voters of adequate provision of security personnel,to ensure their safety during and after the excercise
Osibodu urged voters to visit their respective polling units used for the 2019 general election in the 20 Local Government Areas of the state, to vote for candidates of their choice while charging them to not to sell their votes and mortgage their future
On the payment of the N200,000 and N100,000 non-refundable deposit for the Chairmanship and Councillorship candidates, he explained that the deposit was part of the provisions of the law, setting up OGSIEC and no judgement recieved restraining the commission from collecting the amount
Osibodu clarified that the judgement delivered in Oyo State was specific and only in respect of the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission and not Ogun State
"We will do the needful, if there is a judgement of the court, restraining us as Commission from collecting such deposit from candidates", he assured
He asked all the political parties to submit personal data forms of their respective candidates for the poll to OGSIEC by Tuesday, June 8
Responding to the recruitment procedure for Ad-hoc staff for the excercise, Osibodu enjoined interested members of the public to visit website of the Commission and complete the registration process for recruitment
