ASUP Begins Indefinite Strike,Distrupts MAPOLY's Fresh Session

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has begun its nationwide indefinite strike, to compel the Federal Government to address the issue of poor funding of polytechnic and monotechnic education in Nigeria

The union blamed the Federal Government for the Industrial action, saying nothing was done at the expiration of its ultimatum issued since March 2020,to address the sorry state of polytechnics and monotechnics in the country

ASUP President, Anderson Ezeibe, who announced the strike on Tuesday at a news conference in Abuja , said academic activities had been shut down in all polytechnics and related  institutions nationwide with effect from 12am on April 6.

The decision to withdraw services according to Ezeibe, was reached at the Union’s 99th National Executive Council (NEC) in Katsina State held forth night ago.

The ASUP President explained that the union’s demands were communicated to the ministries of education, labour and others as well as to state governors but nothing was done about them.

The demands of the polytechnics' lecturers, include non-implementation of the 2014 NEEDS Report and non-release of revitalization fund to the sector despite assurances since 2017, .
continued victimisation of union officials, non-establishment of a commission to bridge regulatory gaps in the sector,

Other demands are non-implementation of the approved 65 years retirement age by some state governments, claims of purported tax liabilities, and opaque operations in the deployment of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS) as well as  non-release of arrears of promotion and renewed attempts to insert “offensive” provisions in the scheme of service and conditions of service

They also listed the alleged plans to force ASUP members in some monotechnics out of the union as one of their grievances before the government

Academic activities on the campus of the Ogun State Government owned  Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Ojere in Abeokuta, the state capital, were grounded incompliance with the directive

Chairman of the institution's branch of ASUP, Babatunde Osifalujo  told Edu-Biznews that academic staff would not resume to classrooms for the new 2020/2021 academic session, until they receive directive from the National Leadership of the union

Also no academic activities on the campus of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, but a top official of the institution says the students are on recess.
