An Ogun State based Industrialist, Hon.(Chief) Johnson Olu-Fatoki has expressed worry over the pace of resumed work on Lafenwa-Ayetoro Road, a major commercial road, linking Abeokuta the state capital with other major towns of Ayetoro and Imeko in the state as well as the neigbouring Oyo State.
The road being reconstructed by the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) since the first term of the immediate past Ibikunle Amosun's administration between 2011 and 2015, has been a nightmare for the heavily populated Lafenwa area of the city, particularly among commercial transport Operators who usually ply the route as well as commuters and business owners .
Olu-Fatoki, a former member of the Ogun State House of Assembly and Oganla of Owu-Abeokuta in an exclusive chat with Edu-Biznews recently in Abeokuta, called on the contractors to double their efforts on the construction site and ensure its completion in time before the rainy season set-in.
He stressed the need to complete the road on time, to avoid waste of huge public financial resources expended on the road project .
The former Lawmaker warned that heavy rainfall might cause complete damage to the road, if not completed in time .
"I'm still worry at the state of work on the road, is very slow, the Construction workers are on the ground, surfacing the road but we just pray that the asphalting is done on time and Completed,"Olu-Fatoki urged
The Industrialist described the road as the busiest commercial road in the state, which must be completed by the current Prince Dapo Abiodun's administration, given its economic importance as a major link road to other major towns within the state and neigbouring Oyo State.
"This road is number one commercial road in Ogun State and I want people to challenge me on that, it is the road that links to Ayetoro, Imeko and even Igboora,Iseyin in Oyo State, it is a 24- hour busy road,trucks carrying Charcoal, foodstuffs, from morning till mid-night, it is a commercial road, so any dis-service or in- action by government on this road, is a dis-service to many people and the nation, the State Government has started, we need the contractors to speed up effort to complete the Construction on time", he added
The Owu-Abeokuta Chief whose factory, Olu Ventures Nigeria Limited, producers of Olu quality brand of soaps, is one of the major business outfits on the axis, narrated his ordeal when the construction was stopped mid-way by the Amosun's administration .
"The completion of the road will boost my business, at a time when road got worsened, we found it very difficult for our truck to move goods out of the factory because of the state of road, some parts of the road were eroded by flood, there were gulley erosion and our customers faced serious challenge of moving their goods out of the factory,"he lamented .
Olu-Fatoki recalled the past harrowing experiences of commuters who paid exorbitant transport fares to get to their various destinations because of very few vehicles plying the route when the road was in terrible condition before now
The situation according to him, is gradually changing with the level of work being done on the road but needs more attention before the rainy season comes
