Nigerian Governors Forum(NGF)has banned open as well as night and underage grazing, as part of the security measures aimed at addressing the disturbing clashes between farmers and herders in the country.
They canvassed for the need to embrace modern system of animal husbandry, to replace open grazing by cattle .
The Governors at their 25th virtual meeting on Thursday, reached the consensus on the “need for the country to transition into modern systems of animal husbandry that will replace open, night, and underage grazing in the country.”
The Forum's Chairman, Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State made the position known in a communique issued at the end of its virtual meeting.
They agreed to actualize the implementation of the National Livestock Transformation Plan that will encourage setting up of ranches for grazing in the country .
The Governors were encouraged “to put in place systems to accelerate the grazing initiative of the National Livestock Transformation Plan and ranching in the country.”
The Forum however condemned the ethnic profiling of crime in the country and resolved to “convene an emergency meeting of all Governors” on the matter.
“The Forum respects the right of abode of all Nigerians and strongly condemns criminality and the ethnic profiling of crime in the country in an effort to frame the widespread banditry and the herders- farmers crisis,” the communique said.
Edu-Biznews recalled that the two of farmers were allegedly killed on Thursday by suspected herders in Owode-Ketu in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State .
Also several others were said to have been maimed by the suspected killer Herdsmen in border Communities in Imeko-Afon as Yewa South and Yewa North Local Government Area respectively in Ogun State and other parts of the country.
