Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) are set for a fresh three-day warning strike beginning from Tuesday, to compel the Federal Government to implement the agreement reached with the unions last October, 2020.
The unions under the aegis of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) had on Sunday in Abuja, issued a joint circular signed by General Secretary of NASU, Mr.Peters Adeyemi and President of SSANU,Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, to all branch chairmen of the unions in the universities and Inter-university centers.
A JAC meeting according to Adeyemi, was held on January 8, where the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) reached and signed with the Federal Government on Oct. 20, 2020, was reviewed.
The unions among other demands ,want government to address what they described as inconsistencies in the Integrated Payroll Personnel Information Systems (IPPIS) payment as well as non-payment of Earned Allowances (EA), and non-payment of arrears of minimum wage in addition to the delay by the government in renegotiating 2009 agreement reached with them.
Adeyemi listed other to demands to include non-payment of retirement benefits of out-gone members, teaching staff usurping headships of non-teaching units in clear violation of conditions of service and establishment procedures.
While decrying the neglect and poor funding of state universities and the non-constitution of visitation panels for universities,he revealed that the JAC had directed all its branch chairmen of universities and Inter-Universities centres to hold a mandatory general meeting today (Monday, January 11.) for the proposed Industrial action.
All Universities in Nigeria had been directed by the National Universities Commission NUC to resume next week Monday, January 18 for normal academic activities, inline with the COVID-19 guidelines.
