Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta,(FUNAAB) is set to join other public universities in Nigeria, for a fresh total strike which will once again cripple activities in the University's system over perceived inconsistency by the Federal Government in the implementation of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
The fresh Industrial action is coming at a time when public.universities in the country are gradually settling down for academic activities inline with the COVID-19 guidelines, following the last December 23,suspension of the nine months old strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) who rejected the IPPIS as payment platform among other demands
Edu-Biznews was yet to get the position of the University's chapter of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) as at the time of filing the report on Tuesday, but it is widely believe that the decision will not be different to that of NASU .
The FUNAAB branch Chairman of NASU, Comrade Samson Idowu Edivri in an exclusive chat with Edu-Biznews after the union's Congress in Abeokuta on Tuesday, revealed that members of the union, unanimously agreed for a total strike.
He explained that the decision had be communicated to the National Secretariat of the union expected to meet on Wednesday, to collate the positions of other chapters before holding National Congress this Thursday where all the chapters positions would be finally ratified to embark on an indefinite Industrial action.
The two unions under the aegis of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) after its Three-day warning strike which ended last Thursday, directed all their branch chairmen to hold local congresses in its respective Universities and Inter-Universities centres.
They announced the local congresses in a recent joint circular signed by General Secretary of NASU, Mr.Peters Adeyemi and President of SSANU,Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, to all branch chairmen of the unions.
A JAC meeting according to Adeyemi, was held on January 8, where the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) reached and signed with the Federal Government on Oct. 20, 2020, was reviewed.
The unions among other demands ,want government to address what they described as inconsistencies in the Integrated Payroll Personnel Information Systems (IPPIS) payment as well as non-payment of Earned Allowances (EA), and non-payment of arrears of minimum wage in addition to the delay by the government in renegotiating 2009 agreement reached with them.
Adeyemi listed other to demands to include non-payment of retirement benefits of out-gone members, teaching staff usurping headships of non-teaching units in clear violation of conditions of service and establishment procedures.
JAC decried the neglect and poor funding of state universities and the non-constitution of visitation panels for universities
