Strike is looming among primary school teachers in Edo State, over the unpaid outstanding welfare allowances and poor condition of service in the state.
The State wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers(NUT) had threatened to go on strike, if the state government fails to pay their outstanding welfare allowances and improve the condition of service.
NUT issued the threat in a letter dated November 23, 2020, and signed by the state chairman of the union, Pius Okhueleigbe, and State Secretary, Comrade Mike Itua, which was addressed to Governor Godwin Obaseki .
The union in the letter reminded the governor of the State Government's agreement last July 17, to address the issues of teachers' welfare and improve condition of service in the system which are still pending issues.
The primary school teachers are demanding for Complete payment of their 2013 to 2015 promotion arrears in
Oredo, Orhionmwon, and Uhunwonde Local Government Areas, which the state government was yet to address.
Other demands by the teachers are non-implementation of 2016 to 2018 Promotion of primary school teachers in payrolls since August 2020.
Also the national leadership of NUT through its secretary-general had decided to meet with the state governor on December 3 or December 4.
The union added that the meeting would go a long way in providing lasting solutions to the issues raised as well as avert the looming industrial action.
NUT explained that the teachers were also denied their arrears as per promotion while those omitted from the exercise have not been considered.
Also being demanded by the teachers are the non-release of 2019 Teachers promotions by SUBEB for four months after the state governor’s approval.
“Non-payment of Edo- BEST Training stipends of 2018 and 2019 to about two thousand Teachers who participated in the program.
“Non – remittance of the lawfully deducted schools monthly subvention from the account of Local Government Councils to School Heads from April 2020 till date and delay in the payment of Teachers monthly salaries among others”.
