An Estate Management and Valuation Graduate Can Work In Banks, Insurance Companies,Others- Expert





An Estate Management and Valuation Graduate has a bright prospect of working in banks insurance companies and several other places and not limited to being an Estate or Landed Property Agent, an Expert has  revealed.

The Head of Estate Management and Valuation Department of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic,(MAPOLY) Abeokuta, Estate Surveyor and Valuer, Yomi Ibisola made this known in an exclusive chat with EDU-BIZNEWS Career Guides .

Such graduate according to him,can work in banks, insurance companies, aviation industry, the Ogun State Housing Corporation, Ministry of Housing, Bureau of Land and Survey or engage in private practice by registering his or her firm with the Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria, the regulatory body for the profession in the country".

Ibisola speaking on the career prospect, says "an Estate Management and Valuation Graduate can work in a bank as a Credit officer to assess the asset worth of a bank customer who wants to obtain loan facility ".

He stated that "such graduate can also work as the Facility Manager who is in charge of both the movable and immovable assets of the bank".

The Principal Partner at the Yomi Ibisola Consulting added that "Graduates in the profession are engaged by insurance companies to value the worth of damage caused to insurance policy holders before paying compensation to them among other several opportunities in the profession." 

He explained that the graduate would only be suitable to work in such places after writing the necessary stages of the professional  examination being conducted by the Nigeria Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) on completion of academic programme at either the polytechnic or university.

Ibisola added that for a student who graduated from a polytechnic with full accreditation of NIESV, such would only write the final stage of the professional qualifying examination (PQ3) and professional practice examination (PPE) while those who graduated from a university with full accreditation, such as University of Lagos or Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife would only write the PPE to become a Chartered Estate Surveyor and Valuer.

The Property Expert said such graduate at the PPE stage of professional examination would come up with a thesis, reflecting his or her practical experiences with reference to the challenges faced in the cause of practicing and solutions profered to such challenges.

According to Ibisola," an Associate Membership status will be confered on the graduate after successful  defence of such thesis and later become a fellow of the profession after ten years of active practice as an Associate"

For students interested in studying "Estate Management and Valuation" at the polytechnic or university, they must obtain credits in five subjects at the Senior Secondary School level, including English Language, Mathematics, Economics, any of the Science Subjects, Biology, Chemistry or Physics, any of the vocational subjects, Accounting/Book Keeping, Government, Geography or Further Mathematics.

He described Estate Management and Valuation as very unique course in the School of Environmental Studies , which  combines  both Social Science and Pure Science courses but more of  science related courses.

At the under graduate level, students are expected to take courses like Citizenship Education, Law, in the General Studies Department, courses in Accounting , Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical/Electronic, Architecture , Building Technology, Quantity Surveying, Urban and Regional Planning Departments.

He explained that taking several courses across various departments, would prepare the graduates in the profession to know about others and master their own trade.

For instance, a Graduate of Estate Management and Valuation, should know to how generate water, know different type of roads and quantity of materials being used for the construction of roads for proper Valuation.

It is very difficult to see Graduate of Estate Management and Valuation, not having a place to work, because  every individual irrespective of status,rich or poor, young or old must have a place for accommodation and need the service of an Estate Agent to get such accommodation",he stated.

Ibisola added that an Estate Surveyor and Valuer would also be engaged by property owners to valuate worth of landed property for industrial, residential or commercial purpose.
