Federal Government has designated Government Technical College ,Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State as a model for technical education in Nigeria, just as it awarded scholarships to 150 learners in recognition of the school's excellence.
The Acting Executive Secretary, Ogun State Technical and Vocational Education Board (OGSTVEB), Mrs Mojisola Adenowo revealed this during the maiden graduation ceremony of its Skills Acquisition Centre in Ilisan-Remo, alongside the 2024/2025 graduation of Government Technical College (GTC), Ijebu-Ode, marking another milestone in the State’s revitalisation of technical and vocational education.
She further disclosed that the recent visit of the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, to Singapore was to understudy advanced TVET models, with the objective of integrating global best practices into Ogun State’s technical education system
She expressed deep appreciation to the Ogun State Government for prioritising technical education and strengthening it through its partnership with the World Bank whose efforts had resuscitated and rehabilitated the technical and vocational education sector in the state
The Acting Executive Secretary pointed out that government has made significant investments in infrastructural development, retraining of teachers and the introduction of six new industry-relevant curricula, aimed at boosting employability and ensuring self-reliance among learners.
Adenowo encouraged the graduands who planned to be self-employed but have not yet acquired their own workshop tools, to take advantage of the school’s facilities noting that graduates are permitted to use the fully equipped school workshops to carry out their vocational work, or rent the equipment upon presenting a guarantor, an initiative designed to support young artisans as they begin their entrepreneurial journey.
She also announced that all laboratories and workshops in the institution would be fully equipped, imploring parents to encourage their children and wards to acquire skills, noting that skills, if well harnessed would translate into wealth, just as she revealed that certificates issued by Ogun State technical colleges are globally recognized and accepted.
Adenowo congratulated all graduands, describing them as young, skillful and talented ambassadors and the pride of the State.
In his welcome address, the Principal of GTC Ijebu-Ode, Mr. Adegboyega Adejimi, expressed gratitude to the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his unwavering commitment to revamping technical colleges across Ogun State, while he also appreciated the Commissioner for Education and the Permanent Secretary for ensuring that the colleges receive all necessary resources to excel. He however wished the graduands the very best as they move forward in their professional journey.
Also speaking, the Centre Coordinator of OGSTVEB Skills Acquisition Centre, Ilisan-Remo, Mrs. Basirat Fadipe, commended the pioneer graduands, describing them as ambassadors of vocational education equipped with the competencies needed to combat unemployment and contribute meaningfully to the society.
