The State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Hameed Benco-Ademola , Chairman of Trade Union Congress, Comrade Akeem Lasisi and Secretary of Joint Negotiating Council, Comrade Olayemi Oloyede who made declaration on Tuesday during a press conference in Abeokuta, directed all workers stay away from work beginning from this Wednesday, July 16, 2025
The labour leaders said that the industrial action became necessary after several efforts to reach out to government for meaningful dialogue on how to resolve the issues affecting work failed
The demands of the labour include the total abolition of the contributory pension scheme, implementation of consequential adjustment, payment of inherited 8 years unpaid leave bonuses among others.
They jointly condemned the scheme, saying it execution has been faulty and it had failed to meet its statutory framework of securing workers' welfare.
The NLC Chairman in the state, Comrade Hameed Benco-Ademola , revealed that several letters had been written to the government on the issue, but none had received any positive response
According to him, the scheme had never truly started because the government had shown no commitment to it, owing several months of unremited deductions from workers'salaries and unpaid counterpart contributions to the pension fund managers beginning from the Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun administrations, while Governor Dapo Abiodun had not contributed a single dime since the commencement of the administration in 2019.
Similarly, the duo of TUC and JNC in their separate remarks, noted that the leaders remained open to dialogue and were willing to engage in meaningful discussions with Governor Dapo Abiodun, saying the ongoing strike action would continue until their demands were fully addressed.
The labour leaders stressed that the welfare of workers must be prioritized and urged the government to take urgent steps towards resolving the lingering issues affecting pension contributions and workers’ benefits.
