Fresh Strike Looms In Varsities As SSANU, NASU Hold Protest Rally On Tuesday, Thursday Over Withheld Salaries

Fresh strike is imminent in public universities as both Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) mobilized members for protest on Tuesday and Thursday to compel Federal Government to pay their  withheld 4(four) months salaries

President of SSANU, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim and General Secretary of NASU, Prince Peters Adeyemi issued the directive to all branches of both unions after their Joint Action Committee (JAC) meeting , following what they described as failure of government to address their grievances after the meeting with Minister of Education and counter part in the Labour and Employment in Abuja last week

The protest according to the directive obtained by Edu-Biznews, will begin  simultaneously on Tuesday 9th July,2024 in all branches across public universities in the country with media adequately mobilized to give the needed coverage while a National Protest will hold on Thursday  11th July 2024 in Abuja

Both unions will there after hold their JAC meeting, where a decision on date for the commencement of the strike action will be taken

The two unions said that government has failed to demonstrate it's commitment to payment of the withheld salaries after the engagement with the Minister of Education last Thursday in Abuja

"It is also disheartening that the JAC was also at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and as usual, the Honourable Minister of State was not on seat to receive us, as we were informed that she had an urgent call from the Villa . The Permanent Secretary who stood in for her could not make any commitment on the issues raised", the unions stated

It will recalled that the JAC of both unions had earlier written to the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman dated   19th of June, 2024 in which two weeks ultimatum was given to the government to commence the immediate payment of salaries withheld since the immediate past administration of President Mohammadu Buhari who decided to apply no work no pay rule, following the four months industrial action to protest for better working condition in the university system

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had earlier last week Thursday commenced similar protest among its branches across public universities over the union's members the withheld three and half months salaries and non-implementation of its other demands for an improved  learning, teaching and research in the university system

Both academic and non-academic staff may likely down-tools which total desruption in the stystem, if government failed to respond their various demands
