The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has unfolded its plan to deploy the use of electronic devices to various recognized examination centres across the country for the future conduct of West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)to register candidates and record commencement of paper in each of the centres
Head of National Office WAEC in Nigeria, Dr. Amos Dangut who revealed to newsmen in Abeokuta on Thursday , the Ogun State capital during the ongoing nationwide monitoring of the conduct of the May-June 2024 WASSCE for over 1.8million School Candidates writing the examination, said deployment of the devices would eliminate the current use of paper registration of candidates and detect all forms of malpractices in centres
The HNO who was accompanied by the council's Abeokuta Branch Controller, Mr.Suberu Ayobami and Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Education Science and Technology, Mrs Mariam Oloko, to some of the examination centres in Abeokuta including Baptist Girls' College, Abeokuta Grammar School, Sacred Heart College and Charis International College, also said that WAEC was working towards elimination of paper for the conduct of the examination in future with introduction of the use of Computer Based Test for candidates in schools with ICT facilities while others would continue with pen and paper method
"We are also working on a plan to eliminate paper in the conduct of our examination"
"What we have now is that we take attendance on paper, so we are working towards eliminating taking attendance on paper, we have devices, machines that will be employed in the use of attendance taken" , the HNO disclosed
"The machine has the capacity to tell us when examination begins in schools , it will go a long way to curb instances when some unscrupulous persons will run to one exam centres then delayed the conduct of exams and come with answers from another school" , he stated
"We did computer based examination for private candidates , we are saying that in Future, we are going to give this provision where schools that have facilities to do computer based testing will take examination on computer where those that are not ready will do the pen and paper . We are going to work in consultation with ministry of education to have a timeline for this . When the time comes we shall reel it out ", the HNO revealed
He asked students writing the examination to be confident in themselves while advising parents to encourage their wards to shun all forms of malpractices
He asked the schools visited so far, to expand their facilities to accommodate the increasing number of candidates writing the examination, particularly laboratories for practical examination papers
The HNO who inspected the conduct of Chemistry Practical paper, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of supervisors, invigilators and school candidates writing the examination
"We are in Ogun State to continue with our monitoring and inspection of the conduct of the wasce examination for school candidates , we have gone to some schools to monitor the examination , the assessment is fair and satisfactory because we have seen preparedness and we have seen that the schools have also done there own part in preparing candidates for the examination , the invigilators and supervisors are all up and doing , so we can say that the examination is running smoothly ", he stated
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the State Education Ministry , said that the that the Prince Dapo Abiodun led administration had already kicked-start the process of online registration of pupils in both public and private schools in the state to meet up with the demands of the examination council while ensuring continuous upgrading of ICT and other facilities in public schools to prepare its teachers and students
Similarly, Dr. Aderonke Onadeko , a proprietor of one of the schools visited during the inspection ,Charis International College, said her school had continued to expand its facilities particularly science laboratories for Chemistry, Physic and Biology practical classes and examination
The highly elated founder maintained that the school has zero tolerance for all forms of examination malpractices
