Ogun State Government in collaboration with the Theatre Arts and Motion Picture Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), has resuscitated “Artistes’ Night”, as part of efforts to ensure unity among the practitioners as well as revive the rich tradition of stage performance which is going into extinction in the theatre arts industry
The State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Sesan Fagbayi who was speaking during the event, at the June 12, Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, said the programme would help bring back stage performance to connect and network with individuals, groups, as well as personalities to promote better business opportunities.
Fagbayi recalled that the maiden edition of Artistes Night in the state was held in 1996, while the last edition was held about 22 years after, assuring that the event would be holding every last Friday of the month.
On her part, Permanent Secretary, Teaching Service Commission, Mrs. Melutia Ogunremi, commended the casts, crew and Directors, for their brilliant performance, advising the Ministry to further synergise with the artistes in order to give more of them the opportunities to exhibit their talents through stage performance in the state.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Oluwatosin Oloko, noted that the initiative would help relieve the people of stress, especially amidst the economic situation in the country, appreciating the National President of TAMPAN, Mr. Bolaji Amusan and all executives of the state chapter of the Association in the state for their unwavering commitment towards ensuring the continuity of the programme.
Contributing, Director of Culture in the Ministry, Mr. Femi Osanyinpeju explained that the Ministry collaborated with the Association to create more awareness about the association’s activities, as well as ensure unity between the new and the older generations of Artistes'
President of TAMPAN in an interview, said the need to revive the programme was borne out of the desire to revive stage play, discover upcoming and young artists in the theatre, as well as motion pictures industry.
Highlights of the event were command performance, stage and drama presentations by different groups in the Association, as well as traditional miming by upcoming artistes, among others.
